I like Paloma, the others do seem quite pretentious and/or very unoriginal (PLEASE don't call your child Isabelle)

brimfull · 31/03/2010 12:49

Arabella -slightly pretentious
Ava-lovely
Helena-lovely
Isabelle-no don't like much
Marielle-prefer mary
Raina-no
Georgiana-yes but you'd have to like georgie as nn
Lilia-lovely , I like lilias too
Paloma-pretentious

TreeTrunkThighs · 31/03/2010 12:51

Helena is my fave from your list

dizzydixies · 31/03/2010 12:53

helena or Isabel/la - both lovely
Arabella - no
Ava - ok
Marielle - no, prefer Merrin
raina - no
Georgiana - no, prefer Georgina
Lilia - prefer Lila
Paloma - ok if you have Spanish heritage

Bessie123 - your crusade against all girls being called Isabelle is beginning to annoy me - OP it is popular for a reason, it is pretty, we have an Isabella and she (apart from another one 4yrs younger) are the only ones we know - the popularity of it depends on where you live

if you love a name please use it as you will regret it otherwise

GreenGardenia · 31/03/2010 12:54

Out of those I quite like Georgiana and not too sure about the rest. I was reading about the pronunciation of Georgiana a few weeks ago - in the film she was Geor-jayna and according to Amanda Foreman her "set" deliberately used bonkers pronunciations imitating Cavendish style - like cowcumber and yaller. Would it more normally be George-ee-ana, or George-ee-ahna?

Sorry, am I off topic...

GreenGardenia · 31/03/2010 12:54

Actually yes Georgina is simpler, and pretty.

DinahRod · 31/03/2010 12:56

Adore Helena (like Nell as a nn too)

Paloma and Marielle are distinctive.

Others, like Isobel & Arabel are beautiful enough without over-egging the pudding. Do not like Raina. Ava was super popular a year or two back (well, so are all forms of Isobel and is probably no 1 in popularity).

  1. Helena
  2. Marielle
  3. Paloma
GreenGardenia · 31/03/2010 12:59

I think Isabella is pretty for a child and elegant for a grown-up and I agree if you like a name just use it, who cares what other people are or aren't doing with their children?

I think George is a nice name for a boy or a girl but then I did read a lot of Fatuous Five.

MinnieMalone · 31/03/2010 13:00

Arabella - it's OK, bit posh-turned-mainstream

Ava - nah, way too common these days

Helena - OK

Isabelle - No, especially not with fluffy, fussy 'elle' ending

Marielle - not keen. Like Marianne/Marianna, though.

Raina - it's alright

Georgiana - better than georgina, but still not keen.

Lilia - NO

Paloma - OK but possibility of sounding pretentious

CountessDracula · 31/03/2010 13:02

Arabella - ooh no

Ava - I like it.

Helena - quite like

Isabelle - nope

Marielle - nope

Raina - nope

Georgiana - bit of a mouthful prefer Georgia

Lilia - no

Paloma - no

pitterpatterfeet · 31/03/2010 13:23

Arabella - prefer Araminta
Ava - nice but will date, too faddy
Helena - lovely name
Isabelle - see Ava
Marielle - no
Raina - no
Georgiana - prefer Georgina
Lilia - no
Paloma - no

CuppaTeaJanice · 31/03/2010 13:31

I vote Marielle - pretty but not too popular.

doubleexpresso · 31/03/2010 13:38

Helena, or Lilia.

Effjay · 31/03/2010 13:39

Ava and Marielle are my favourites. don't do Isabelle, as there are far too many. There are currently three of them in DS1s nursery group and it gets v. confusing

notsochickchickchicken · 31/03/2010 13:46

Not really keen on any elle/ella or a ending names.
Arabella- Don't like too fussy.

Ava- heard to many, Eve is nicer.

Helena- Prefer Helen or Nell.

Isabelle- not keen.

Marielle- horrid sorry Mariella is mildly nicer.

Raina- Don't like at all.

Georgiana- Georgia is much nicer.

Lilia- Don't like, will forever be saying it's not Lilian.

Paloma- not keen and will be very popular due to Paloma Faith.

Bonsoir · 31/03/2010 13:48

Georgiana is fab, Arabella is great.

Don't like any others.

Magaly · 31/03/2010 14:27

Arabella - no. like a parody of a posh girl
Ava - nice but popular
Helena - take away the H. Elena much nicer
Isabelle - Ok
Marielle - no. sounds like a biscuit. Marianne is beautiful though
Raina - like a Queen? (Reina)
Georgiana - I like it. Tiny bit of a mouthful but I like it.
Lilia - ok, bit girly and lost in a sea of L names. Lydia has more backbone.
Paloma - beautiful. Really like it. could be polly for a nn too!

Ava, Georgiana or Paloma get my vote.

I only like Helena, I'm afraid.

Marielle ok but only if you are French.

Ditto Paloma.

CaptainPicardsPineapple · 31/03/2010 14:42

Arabella-OK, pretty.

Ava-OK, pretty.

Helena-Pretty, like it.

Isabelle-Pretty, like it.

Marielle-OK, pretty.

Raina-Not so keen.

Georgiana_Like it lots, very pretty as long as it's pronounced Jaw-jay-na

Lilia-Ok, pretty.

Paloma-don't like it.

Wanderingsheep · 31/03/2010 14:52

What's wrong with Isabelle?

I wouldn't have thought it would date that easily as there are people with all ages with the name.

I have an Isabel but really like the Isabelle spelling.

Wanderingsheep · 31/03/2010 14:56

I like all of your names, btw, except for Raina and Paloma . There's nothing wrong with them, they're just not names that I would pick.

CountessDracula · 31/03/2010 14:58

I said no to isabelle because I don't like Izzy particularly and they all end up being that it seems

ReneRusso · 31/03/2010 14:59

I like Helena and Isabelle best.
