I had the same question wanderingsheep!

I like Isabelle best from your list,

Not keen on Paloma and Marielle - too quirky for me but I do think it depends where you live in terms of what's popular/what you can get away with. In the Midlands everyone plays it safe with names I think!

Krugerellie · 31/03/2010 15:01

Love Helena. What about Eva instead of Ava?

Wanderingsheep · 31/03/2010 15:04

Tbh, I didn't like 'Izzy' either when I was pregnant.

Now that DD is here Izzy has grown on me and I like it, but nobody calls her Izzy, only Isabel. I imagine that may change when she goes to school...

Lonnie · 31/03/2010 15:04

Arabella I know many of them it is considered potentious

Ava Getting very common if you dont mind that it is a pretty name

Helena pretty and not too many around

Isabelle common imo and Izzy always become the nickname (never liked that)

Marielle Beautiful and unusual

Raina I love it unusual and she wont meet any others with it

Georgiana Never cared much for the feminine versions of George

Lilia I like it

Paloma It is a very strong feminine name not everyone can carry that off imo

missytequila · 31/03/2010 15:17

Honestly i do not understand the isabelle debate.
I do not think it is trendy at all, it just happens to be a classic name that has come back into popularity...it has been around for ages..

I agree they may be too many running around, but I do think it stands up over time..

Anyway I appreciate the honest comments.
Still cant decide!

our DD1 is Ella not Issy and she will always be Ella to us regardless of what she comes home from school with - I have no say over what her friends will call her just the same way my mother had no say in what my friends called me

AmIKiddingMyself · 31/03/2010 15:53

Arabella - No, too princessy
Ava - Like
Helena - Like
Isabelle - Prefer Isobel or Isabel
Marielle - Quite nice, again, prefer Mariel
Raina - Not keen, though oddly I like Raine
Georgiana - Not keen, bit pretentious
Lilia - Prefer Lilian
Paloma - Not keen

I don't think anyone else's opinion matters though
For eg I don't like the nickname Izzy because I always hear this really wet sounding mum I know saying "oh izzy" to her little girl and I think it sounds drippy

And I don't like Arabella because I was at school with a horrid one
So it's subjective innit?

Wanderingsheep · 31/03/2010 20:34

Ooh, Dizzydixies, I like the use of Ella for a nn for Isabella! Two lovely names . My Grandma was called Ella and I love that name!

seashore · 31/03/2010 20:41

Helena is my fav from your list, really not keen on Paloma, it's just heading over to too posh. Helena is lovely, solid, strong but still pretty.

PollyTechnique · 31/03/2010 20:56

Love: Isabelle

Like: Marielle

Possibly pretenious: Arabella, Georgiana and Paloma.

Sorry, not keen on: Ava, Helena, Raina and Lilia.

AllieW · 01/04/2010 14:30

I love them all except Raina, Georgiana and Paloma. I particularly dislike Georgiana because, on the whole, I don't like girls' names which seem to be mere extensions/prettifications of boys' names and feel they should have a name in their own right.

I disagree strongly that Ava and Isabelle will date, too. It's not like Ava has just been made up in the last decade: Ava Gardner is a case in point.

houseworkhater · 01/04/2010 20:32

I agree with AllieW especially re the Isabelle will date comment, Isabel is a very traditional name, not one made up in the 21st century.

qwerty123 · 01/04/2010 23:36

Love Arabella.

LaDiDaDi · 01/04/2010 23:38

Helena, Marielle or Paloma.

eatyourveg · 02/04/2010 10:29

Helena gets my vote

ChippingIn · 02/04/2010 12:57

Arabella - sounds 'posh' so depends where you live (if she could carry it off or get teased endlessly?!)
Ava - never liked, now over used
Helena - nope - know one, don't like her!
Isabelle - Yes
Marielle - Nope
Raina - Nope
Georgiana - like Georgia, but not Georgiana
Lilia - Nope
Paloma - sounds like a horse

So, Arabelle (if you live somewhere 'appropriate') or Isabelle or Georgia...

BessieBoots · 02/04/2010 12:59

Arabella- a bit poncey
Ava- lovely
Helena- very nice
Isabelle- there are lots of them
Marielle- sounds like a feminine hygiene product...
Raina- Weird
Georgiana- too posh
Lilia- Lovely
Paloma- Brill

winnybella · 02/04/2010 13:02

Arabella, Isabella (don't like e on the end unless you're French) and Georgiana

Ellokitty · 03/04/2010 09:30

Helena is by far the best name on your list (imho). It is beautiful, classy but not pretentious, common enough for everyone to know it, yet unusual enough to probably be the only girl in her class (if not school) with that name.

mathanxiety · 03/04/2010 17:33

Arabella -- Like a lot
Ava -- like a lot, but it's very 'of the moment'
Helena -- LOVE
Isabelle -- tooooo popular, but it's so nice
Marielle -- LOVE, prefer Mariel spelling and sound
Raina -- meh, prefer Irina by a long shot
Georgiana -- like a lot
Lilia -- LOVE
Paloma -- LOVE

madamefreckle · 04/04/2010 21:30

Helena - lovely

janeite · 04/04/2010 21:33

Arabella - I like it but it does make me think of poor little Arabella, why didn't someone tell her not to use her umbrella when the North wind blows?
Ava - ok
Helena - gorgeous
Isabelle - nice but prefer Isobel
Marielle - no
Raina - ooh no
Georgiana - lovely
Lilia - ok
Paloma - dislike

autumnblaze · 04/04/2010 21:45

Georgiana is the best!
