RAGE- inducing baby names

just looking through and found that some more unusual names can generate a lot of hateful posts. Personally I think most anything besides obvious clangers like P. Neece can go & it's a lovely way to express creativity.

So why do some people post just downright rude messages? It's actually very rude & some posters don't seem to realise that it's all a matter of opinion anyway, just because you personally dont like a name, it doesn't mean it's a bad name! YOU don't have to name your kids it!

I think RAGE is slightly dramatic, asking for opinions on the baby naming threads on Mumsnet guarantees you get honest and frank opinions - I agree that sometimes use of the words like 'chav' or 'horrible' are not entirely necessary however I wouldn't be taking offence - life would be very boring if we all had our kids named the same thing

and if you're that bothered by it why not just hide the baby name threads?

I agree with Poppy and think that some posts on here are really nasty! Maybe not rage-inducing, but some are rude. I agree that people want honest opinions when they post, but there are nice ways to say you don't like something - especially considering that you might be speaking to sensitive pregnant people!

I have to say that I think people who are being "rude" about names are usually just giving an honest opinion for which they have been asked.

When a parent chooses a name, they aren't choosing it for themselves. They are choosing it for a different human being entirely, someone who will have to go through life saddled with it. I think these posters are just trying to prevent innocent babies being called ridiculous names and suffering a lifetime of humiliation.

Don't ask if you can't handle the truth.

In RL, our friends will lie to your face and say 'Ooh, Vulvamydia....how unusual'. On MN, you will get told straight it is mingtastic and you are a fruit loop for even considering it.

I'm very straight talking about names. Because people are asking for opinions. So opinions is what they get.
Utterly absurd names don't induce rage in me though. Pity, maybe, derision, sometimes, rage I save for the breastfeeding threads.

I think if a name gets a negative reaction on Mumsnet, it's a pretty good indication of what that child is going to face going through life with that name. Some 'creative' names work really well. Others are plain awful. MNetters will give you an honest opinion as to which camp your choice falls into.

Surely the convention with threads on this topic is that, if someone comes along and says 'I'm thinking of naming my DS Beelzebub, what do you think?', then we let rip. They asked for an opinion.

If, however, they come along and say that little Beelzebub was born last Friday weighing 7 pounds we say congratulations and what an interesting name...

I agree that some posters are unecessarily rude and nasty about certain names. It's hurtful when someone sneers at a name you've chosen or are considering.

That said I would never ask the opinion of anyone let alone MN on something so personal.

Can't people just tone down the insults about names since it's well known now that people feel hurt.

Spidermama I did start a slight crusade encouraging people to just state that a name wasn't to their taste rather than trashing it completely - it lasted for about 5 minutes!!

I would certainly have supported your plan Dizzy. I think that rather than genuinely trying to help a mum choose a name, these people are attempting to be funny and popular at the expense of others.

I think the worst ones aren't when people say the OP is nutty as a fruitloop but when they say it's a wind up or that perfectly normal names are poncetastic because of the combination. I've seen threads where a name is lovely and approved of but the next thread it's put with a sibling and people have a completely different view.
