... you really, really don't like any of the suggested names? Do you stay off the thread (which I do currently) OR do people really want to know whether you like it or not??? Or should people make that clear in their post?

OP posts:

I let rip.

MarshaBrady · 15/01/2010 19:29

Are you really not referring to a thread on here?

pile in btw

differentID · 15/01/2010 19:30

I post my opinions as that is what is invited.

LynetteScavo · 15/01/2010 19:30

I don't bother posting.

I was virtually ripped apart once for saying I didn't really like the name Holly. They had asked for opinions, but I guess, just not opinions of people who didn't agree with the OP.

thisisyesterday · 15/01/2010 19:31

it depends how it is worded

if someone just posts saying "help me decide between these" then i would either say which i liked best/disliked least, or if i thought all were awful i'd say nothing, or maybe offer some other suggestions

if they have asked for an opinion on their names then i would tell the truth

i just say that i dont like them.

i think people would rather see the opinions of strangers so thaht they can then gage the reaction of their rl friends and familiy.

if we all hate it then it saves them the embarrassment of having to get the reaction fro family.

nickytwotimes · 15/01/2010 19:31

I give my opinion.

If people don't want to hear it, then they shouldn't ask!

MrsMattie · 15/01/2010 19:33

If someone posts: 'What do you think of the name Chav-Anne' I will happily say: "It's fucking horrible". Don't ask if you don't want to know!

crankytwanky · 15/01/2010 20:21

I avoid. I try to not say anything online that I wouldn't say in RL. (Wanking threads notwithstanding)

I don't like confrontation, and don't like the idea of upsetting someone.

am just very grateful MN didn't exist (or at least I didn't know about it!) when I was choosing DC's names!!!

OP posts:
coppit · 15/01/2010 20:59

I usually say "Sorry, I don't mean to be rude but I don't like any of them"

lilolilmanchester · 15/01/2010 21:07

so, is it better / more helpful to say "I really, really don't like that name"/ "don't give your child that name unless they are going to Eton cos they'd get their head kicked in round here " OR do you just politely not post on the thread?

OP posts:
Botbot · 15/01/2010 21:08

I try to say why I don't like it - the associations the name has for me ? rather than just say 'that is shit'. After all, it's all pretty subjective isn't it?

lilolilmanchester · 15/01/2010 21:12

yes, I would definitely say why I didn't like something if I were to post, but even when people ask for opinions, I am really not sure they want you to say that you really hate it, even if you can back that up with reasons why, iykwim

OP posts:
gerontius · 15/01/2010 21:13

Mamazon, how does your silence do the talking? Surely that would mean that everyone who hadn't posted didn't like the name, which would be almost all of MN?

I often need to sit on my hands to avoid posting.

SqueezyB · 15/01/2010 21:21

whenever I have posted about names on here it's because I want an honest answer, especially if it's a slightly unusual name - I figure MN is probably a good cross section of the general public. So I figure that's what other people want too, otherwise what's the point of posting?!

Obviously you can be honest without being rude though!

differentID · 15/01/2010 21:45

Shiney- I never said that!

it was based on how they screeched the name after their little darling was wrecking the joint!

Shiney-there's always the small chance she could revert in a few years

JamesandHisFlamingSword · 16/01/2010 02:06

I alsways say if I don't like them, but very apologetically.

Don't ever rouse a Katie ....
