... you really, really don't like any of the suggested names? Do you stay off the thread (which I do currently) OR do people really want to know whether you like it or not??? Or should people make that clear in their post?

I give a very softened version of how I feel. I have seen names on here that absolutely shock me and actually make me feel slightly sorry for the child. But my standard response remains the same - "not to my taste sorry".

DiamondHead · 16/01/2010 09:32

I think it depends on what the op writes.

If they say what do you think of Satine-Sky, I'd say it mings.

If they write a shortlist and I hate them all I wouldn't comment - clearly we have very different tastes so my opinion wouldn't matter.

i once ask ppl on here what they thought of my kids names my ds2 has a chav name ,but im not botherd what ppl think i like them thats all that matters ,my dd is pg and i once askes what ppl thoughtof the names she chose and i got a lot of so called jokes

belgo · 16/01/2010 09:34

I try and be polite. It's not always easy though!

Alicetheinvisible · 16/01/2010 09:36

I think it depends how they ask iyswim? Also depends on the name. Previous poster (sorry can't remember who) mentioned Holly. I wouldn't think it needed someone saying something negative about a more traditional name, simply because no one in RL is going to say something. But if they were asking for honest opinions on, say Shiney then i think it is perfectly acceptable to say what you think.

ps, if this makes no sense, please ignore i am struggling this morning (more of a grimace really)

FlightAttendant · 16/01/2010 09:46

I'm not entirely sure why people even ask.

I think they feel satisfied in their choice probably and want to gather at least ONE positive vote in order to cement it

If I had chosen the name i would be pleased with one 'yes' and not at all bothered by the 'bloody hell' votes

but then I am quite used to being pilloried about anything really so it kind of washes over me.

I tend to be honest but polite on the baby name choices, tis hard to know what is best. I'd never say 'fecking horrible' though. That's just being rude.

On the 'letting my silence speak' note I would be so so happy to see a thread asking about a truly diabolical name completely ignored by the whole of MN.

tartyhighheels · 16/01/2010 09:49

I have just experienced just this dilemma. Someone has asked for opinions on a boys name which is just fucking dreadful and massively chavvy (well it is round here anyway) but I got half way through typing and deleted it.

FlightAttendant · 16/01/2010 09:50

what does everyone think of 'd'artagnan-roger' ? our surname is Flake.

[silence]

'bump'

[deafening silence'

'Ok then we'll stick with trevor'

5inthebed · 16/01/2010 09:53

FA

Trevor

belgo · 16/01/2010 09:54

Flight - I think D'artagnan is more likely to get a positive response on mumsnet then Trevor!

FlightAttendant · 16/01/2010 09:56

True Belg

MamaLazarou · 16/01/2010 16:53

Depends, really. If I strongly dislike all the names on a list, I will say 'Don't like any of them, sorry'. If, however, someone is asking me to choose between, for instance, James, Joshua and Jack, then I won't post anything, because these names all seem exactly the same to me and so I wouldn't be able to favour one above the other.
