Help name DC4 - we cannot agree at all!

So, we have a Theo(dore) who is almost 6, so ahead of the curve I hope, but still it's now horribly popular, then a Rufus and although we have a girl's name sorted out, we cannot agree on this baby's name if it is a boy. We'd like it to be a 'smart' name IYKWIM, but not OTT, so things like Ptolemy and Tarquin are out for instance. We have a double-barrelled surname beginning with H, so although we both love Hugo, Henry and William, due to the surname, they don't work.

We thought we'd settled on either Magnus or Hector, but DH has now gone off those - particularly as with the -us ending on both Rufus and Magnus, it might be a bit OTT. We'd like to include Victor in the name as DH's grandfather was Victor, but neither of us like it enough to use it as a first name.

Help!!!

Jonte
Nathaniel
Milo
Alec

Thanks for your list Doozie - I have had most of those, bar Balthazar, Cyril and Teague on my list!

Simon is my brother's name so I don't think we could run with that - would be a bit confusing!

I LOVE Hector but DH not sure. Frederick - I'm warming to this, but I really don't like Fred, so it would have to be Freddie, and it does seem quite popular, which we'd like to try and avoid! I have tried all of the others on DH and he doesn't really like any of them enough to run with them. ARGH, it's so hard!!

Sunshinemummy - not sure about Onni, but I do like Ludovic. DH not keen - he was at school with one who has rather tainted the name for him!!

Christoph/Christopher/Kit we've talked about but there are already a couple in the family so probably a no.

Popsypie - Jonte (which I would spell Jonte) I like, but DH not sure. Neither of us like the shortened versions of Nathaniel. Milo is a tweenie and Alec is too close to cousins etc.

I am going slightly mad with all of this - we struggled a bit with Rufus, but not nearly to this extent!!

We may have come back around to Monty Victor something, or Monty something Victor, but DH not convinced. I love the name Monty, although I know it's one of those names that divides the MN name jury!

if my 2 had been boys were going to be Bartholomew ( to be known as Tolly) Lysander ( to be known as as sandy) or Marcus ( but prob to close to Rufus)

mathanxiety · 18/01/2010 19:50

Another nn for Frederick is Fritz.

PanicMode · 18/01/2010 20:06

mummydoch - I love Bartholemew, and Tolly, but we have a Tilly so we can't use it really! Lysander, DH isn't keen (and I'm not sure I really like Sandy tbh), and I do really like Marcus, but as you say, it's probably too close to Rufus.

Hi mathananxiety - not sure about Fritz....will have a ponder.

"Another nn for Frederick is Fritz."

No it isn't. REALLY no it isn't. Well, it might be in Berlin, but it isn't in Streatham!

sorry havn't read the whole thread buthow about Gregory

mathanxiety · 19/01/2010 05:29

What's wrong with Fritz? It's a short hop from Friedrich to Frederick, after all. I knew one in the US who was about 4th generation American, and oldest DD had a Fritz in her class (both had Norwegian ancestors). Is it really that 'forrin'?

mummydoc · 19/01/2010 08:28

what about Rory ?

maddylou · 19/01/2010 08:46

Alfred-Alfie
Charlie

Jago
Lyle
Fergus
Coen

PanicMode · 19/01/2010 19:25

LOL at Seeker - I did think something similar but didn't want to be quite so overt!! I think, mathanxiety that it's too Germanic for me, even though DH has Scandinavian roots. I just imagine lots of children saying "don't mention the war" every time the child walked into a classroom....

smable - I love Gregory/Greg but DH isn't sure at all about it!

mummydoc - I love Rory, but Rory and Rufus?! Plus DS1 can't say his Rs so it would be a bit cruel as it's bad enough we have a Wuu-fus, but a Wor-wee too ?!

Alfie - FAR too many of them
Ditto Charlie and Max (although DD would have been a Max!). Stefan, know one or two and like it but don't love it.

Jago, I love and it works with my West Country roots, but DH doesn't like it. Lyle makes me think of sugar. Fergus, I love, but Rufus and Fergus - too much?!
Coen - too American sounding for me

We are doomed - we're FAR too picky!!

sorry if im not thinking straight..but does the name HAVE to have a nn??
for example if i named my child sebastian, he would be called sebastian, not seb/bas.. it would be the name i loved not the nn..just a thought

so:
sebastian
tobias
alexander
noah
jacob
lucas
aiden
elijah
florian (know one with nn flossy :D)
cyrus (poss to much -us)

AngryPixie · 20/01/2010 09:38

Work on Jago Victor, I think it's v cute and cool!
Also, not too many options for a nn but if it goes to Jay that's cool too.

PanicMode · 20/01/2010 10:03

Angry Pixie - I like your thinking - will work on DH!

Although I know what he'll say - The-O and Jag-O may be OTT?!

Loobylu - have been round most of those tbh and some don't work with the surname, some DH has vetoed outright. I actually really like Jasper but DS1 says he absolutely hates it, so that's making it hard!

livefortoday - it doesn't HAVE to be a nn no, but I can't imagine that Sebastian wouldn't get shortened....particularly when I'm calling out for all four of them!!

pranma - I like several of those, esp. Barney, but DH doesn't

I need a "knocking head against brick wall/DH" smiley at this point!!
