Baby name regret - have clenched stomach and can't bear it

DD1 (DC2) is 5 weeks old. We hadn't decided her name before she was born, although had been bandying about Rosie and some others. After she was born we took a few days to make our minds up. I am terrible at making decisions - it takes me forever to pick curtains and the like but, that's just curtains.
We didn't call her Rosie as couldnt' think of a long official version that we liked. And I was possibly worried about Rosise sounding maybe too twee. Anyway, finally named her Evlyn Rose, which I love as an official name. Then I went off and told all my family 'Evlyn' and dh told all his family and friends 'Evie'. I do agree with him that we had talked about Evie but it seems that I hadn't got round to saying that I preferred Evlyn. When someone says 'Evie' I don't like it, not that I don't like the name, I do, it's just it seems too over familiar (after all she's just a tiny baby), more something that's a pet name you'd give someone you knew really well. Then to make things worse, my Dad started calling her Rosie as a nickname and now I think I prefer it. We have got to refer to her as one name I think or it's just going to get ridiculous.
I am sick of myself and my inability to make a decision!
Does anyone have an opinion on the names, or how I can decide??

Yes - call her Rosie. Maybe switch the Evelyn to a middle name? Evelyn is such a lovely name but not great with Ethan.

I think, without wishing to be patronising, that you need to get some sleep and stop obsessing.

you agreed on Evie, your dh likes it, and it's a lovely name. I know a teenager with it and it suited her as a tiny child and a teen.

I don't get this idea that it 'doesn't go with her brother's name' either

Could you leave it for a few weeks to work out whether this is sleep deprivation at work, making things seem out of all proportion, or a serious problem?

If you prefer Rosie then call her Rosie.

Is Evlyn usually spelt Evlyn btw?

Evlyn Rose is a lovely name.
I think its fine for your Dad to call her Rosie as his own nickname, its cute.
And if you prefer her to be called Evlyn rather than Evie then (as long as DH agrees too!) just keep calling her Evlyn in front of people. If they call her Evie just tell them the truth 'oh we were going to shortern it to Evie, but now she's here she really suits Evlyn better'
The perfect way to instill it in everyone is to send birth announcement cards/thank you cards for gifts and sign them all Evlyn.
Then again write Evlyn in all your christmas cards etc.

I did a similar thing when DS was born. DH anounced a different shortened name to the one I wanted (and we had discussed!) when he was born. After I sent thank you letters to everyone with the name I preferred it really changed it in everyones minds. Now he is only ever called my nickname

Personally I prefer Rosie.

She can decide when she's old enough if she wants to change.

Why not carry on calling her Evie or Evelyn for now. It's perfectly nice.

I think it is fine for different people to use different diminutives. I oftgen call my daughter a diminutive of her middle name, no-one else does, and DH calls her a pet version of her first name. Her GP's use another diminutive that we use sometimes but not often.

FIL calls DS something that is not anything to do with his name at all, and he is called various diminutives of his name by different family members.

DD and DS answer to all their pet names, and I think it is nice that they have a variety of names from different people.

rosie's lovely, if you prefer it, use it. (although logically if evie sounds over-familiar, so must rosie).

Just to be pedantic, "Evlyn" should be pronounced with a short "e" like "egg", not a long "e" like "Eve" (or "Evie" - I presume her name isn't e-vie).

If you feel strongly about it, make your opinion known NOW.

Evelyn Rosie is a beautiful name you've chosen for your baby girl. Most people take their cue from the mother anyway - a friend named one of her twins girls Evelyn and did intend to use a shortened version, but has only ever referred to her as Evelyn and that's what everyone calls her.

Evlyn Rose is a lovely name.

Evie is not overly familiar - it could be a pet name or simply a shortened version, you are hearing it as a pet name but others are probably using it just as a shortened version - especially as it can be used as a name in its own right.

Using Rosie as well will not matter a bit, most families have a pet name for their children, often it is a silly word that is not a name at all and dc are not confused by it because they grow up with it.

A friend of mine named her dd and then everyone stated calling her Daisy-May as a pet name, it stuck but Daisy-May uses her formal name with friends and in school, Daisy-May is just for family and close family friends!

Relax and let it all sit for a while, names usually fall into a familiar pattern after a while.

I've been there - had terrible regrets about my ds's name after he was born. Kept me awake at night - not good when you aren't getting much sleep anyway!
All I can say is that it has massively grown on me as he has got older and he really suits his name now.
I think Evie is a sweet name but if you are going to change it do it asap before other people get to used to it!

I think both are lovely names.

DD is called Evelyn Grace (with an 'e' like egg squeaver). Most of the time she is called Evelyn, or Evelyn Grace (especially by family and friends).

We think she will decide for herself when she is old enough what she prefers to be called.

But back on to topic, if you feel strongly about what name you use for your daughter let your opinion be known. And I agree with allabutme's suggestions.

I did feel a wobble about ds1's name - but put it down to him being referred to by any name at all being weird.
reading these posts tho i think it's clear that our chosen spelling will be an issue - Evlyn can be spelt like that but it seems most people assume Evelyn

I think it is fine for you to refer to her as Rosie, like others say it is a pet name and will make her 2 names seem real. No one ever uses my middle name, not sure why I have it really!

Stick with her name as you have given it, just start using Rosie and it will stick.

Stick with Evlyn Rose, You call her Evlyn, DH's petname is Evie and grandads is Rosie.

My kids are called allsorts, from thier names when they were a bump, to new nicknames, long versions and short of thier 'proper' names. We announced DS's birth, using his 'longname' Samuel, and instantly got messages and cards saying 'congratulations on the birth of Sam', which we rarely use!

Don't stress, get some sleep and enjoy your baby

Sorry - just seen that you like Rosie too...lots of people use middlename instead of first, or variations at work/home.

Have you registered her yet? Does DH know your concerns??

Alternatively, spend the next week calling her darling, sweetheart, my love, poppet, etc, and make a resolution to come back to it in no less than 7 days! It might give you a little space to decide what it right for her and you!
