Winter- is this a good name?

A friend of mine asked me what I thought of this as a potential name for her expected little girl. I said I wasn't sure for a first name but thought it could work really well as a middle name. What do other people think?

I really love it. I'm not a fan of 'normal' (read boooooooooring) names though.

Nope, not as a first name, but like it as a middle name.

For a boy.

I knew a Wyn at Uni who was very cool, so Winter makes me think of him.

Note that there hasn't been any for 10 months, so perhaps I'm being hopelessly romantic.

Someone I vaguely know called a baby girl Winter.

I'm not a fan of it myself. Connotations not especially nice (cold, wet, barren, hostile) and the sound of the name itself not lovely either- it sounds "hard".

I'm not opposed to naming a child after a season or month or whatever per se. Summer is a lovely name imo and conjures up lots of positive associations. My baby is due in Jan though, so it's not on the list!

It only works as a middle name with 'Lady de' as the first names

i love it. makes me think of sparkly icicles and toasty fires. i love winnie for a little one too....

Oh, I rather like it. It's a bit like Willow - which I find rather sweet but a wee bit hippyish for me.
I wouldn't worry about bullying - but then my ds's school is full of dcs with rather out there names.
However the first thing that came to mind was this

Wow people really can be mean cant they Winter is my sons name and it really suits him he is bubbley and sweet I wonder how people on here who are so quick to say negative things about it would feel if it was their childs name being ripped to shreds?

Also I'm quite sure that most Mumsnetter's children's names have been discussed on here. It is a baby name forum after all.

It's rather difficult to avoid sharing opinions of names on a forum specifically designed to discuss them.

Also it's not personal. We're not discussing your child,or any other named Winter,but the name.

If we worried about others being offended,then we'd never be able to discuss any name on here,because inevitably someone,somewhere will be called it.

There's little point in people asking for opinions on baby names if the only response we can give,no matter what we actually think, is 'How lovely'.

I like it quite nice for a boy. I like Summer & Autumn, too so shoot me.

IMO it's the least offensive of all the season names.

Summer = hippy
Spring = really??
Autumn = outdated and overrated
Winter = pretty ok really

I think it's lovely, but then I am the only person who'd call a child "Snowdrop". Not that I have, but when I suggested it on here a while ago it was universally flamed. And I still don't know why!
