Winter- is this a good name?

A friend of mine asked me what I thought of this as a potential name for her expected little girl. I said I wasn't sure for a first name but thought it could work really well as a middle name. What do other people think?

I like it - so hmph

hennypennyhen · 14/10/2009 16:15

Pretty negative reaction then! I still think it would be fine in the middle slot!

I was at school with a boy called Winter and a girl called Summer 15 years ago.

FlightAttendant · 14/10/2009 17:54

i think the main reason it bothers me at all - which it doesn't, much - is that the reasoning behind the name might be the kid being born in Winter...in which case it kind of makes you go 'well so what - a quarter of babies are born in Winter! that's nothing special!!'

I suppose it is the pedant in me...

donttrythisathome · 14/10/2009 18:24

I think it's lovely.

LynetteScavo · 14/10/2009 18:27

No, it's not a good name. It sounds like a sur name.

I hate winter.

TanyaBranning · 15/10/2009 21:09

I quite like it, and I am not usually one for chavvy kooky names.

katnkittens · 15/10/2009 22:19

I quite like it.. I also love Autumn.

Probably wouldn't use them though!

pointyhat · 15/10/2009 22:32

no

wheniwishuponastar · 15/10/2009 22:33

agree winter sounds better for a boy. i quite like it.

nooka · 16/10/2009 05:49

I'm not keen on seasonal or month names, and Winter sounds cold and spiky to me, so not very attractive. I think you can pretty much use what you like in the middle, but not as a first name. dd had a friend called Autumn for a while, and I found that hard to get used to, although it was in the States where they don't really use Autumn (always Fall).

melpomene · 16/10/2009 13:41

I like it but think it is a little too wacky for a first name, better as a middle name.

Spring would be a worse name though!

I had a client once who had it as his middle aame. He had fairly traditional first and surnames so the 'Winter' in the middle added a poetic touch, I thought.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 16/10/2009 22:03

I don't like it. I don't think it sounds nice enough for a name. Now, Frigid has a ring to it, quite Scandinavian.

tearinghairout · 16/10/2009 22:08

Oooh no. Too chilly.

sparklycheerymummy · 16/10/2009 22:12

Jenny Talia ha ha ha. i once taught a girl called Summer and it suited her but not so sure about winter x

starmucks · 16/10/2009 22:16

Awful. Can you imagine any time poor child is is grumpy it'll be "alas here is our Winter of discontent".

Merle · 17/10/2009 08:32

It reminds me of snowflakes and frosty landscapes. Magical. Use it.

MrsDimples · 17/10/2009 09:48

I like it.

MaggieBehaveOutGuising · 17/10/2009 12:44

I wouldn't pick it, it's not my style at all as polite people would say,,, but I love the nn Winnie!

BrigitBigKnickers · 17/10/2009 13:08

Autumn/ Summer- yes lovely unusual but not too "out there" names.

Winter?- no specially not for a girl- sounds too masculine.

Clary · 17/10/2009 13:17

I know of a child called Autumn. Ah seeker I see you are there before me - you really are me aren't you

I think Winter is rather more odd. Summer is becoming popular - in a hippy-chick kind of way.

Clary · 17/10/2009 13:18

Mrs Badger we know families with the surnames Hannah and Rose - which leads to all sorts of possibilities (obv lots of children with first names Rose and Hannah!)

Well my kids like to have fun with it anyway.

Silvj · 17/10/2009 16:12

Winter is pretty but it will get shortened to Win/Winnie, so depends if you like that?
