Scottish baby name??

Our baby is due in January, not sure if it's a boy or girl and we are struggling to agree on any name...

we have a very scottish surname and DH will only consider a scottish firstname, I don't really see why but I'll go with it for now...

Also, some of the names I like DH thinks are 'Public school' types!! Can't win!

My favourite site when I was pregnant was the general register scotland's baby list. To find it I type general register scotland baby names in google. It always comes up with the 2005 list first, but on the left had side if you click on 2008 (2009 not out yet) you will find a baby names news story and what you want is the detailed tables. It's brill. Every name registered in Scotland in 2008 and how many of then there were.

Doughnutty, I love the name Eilidh but that is name of DH's neice.

I've managed to persuade him we cannot have James as that is his nephew.

DH like Catherine for a girl but I would like something a little more unusual...

My husband is not Scottish at all, but is called Angus. When people are introduced to him I reckon at least 50% of them comment on what a great name it is and I agree. Is Clara Scottish? Sounds like it might be and I think it's very pretty.

Lola0109, Lachlan is growing on me but we live and work quite near a few of Edinburgh's posh schools, DH cannot seem to say 'Lachlan', 'Finlay' without putting on a posh Edinburgh Accent and waving his hands about - he even throws in a 'Crawford' and 'Farquhar'!!
I think they are good old scottish names but not they way he says them!!

Angus is a good name but [there's always a but] my previous boss was called Angus and there was no love lost there, my next boss was Euan which is also a good name - it's just the association that is putting me off!

I like Flora too... DH reaction was "I can't believe it's not butter!"

Alistair is a good name, it is my uncle's name but that is not putting me off.

on girls side also Morna (dd1's middle name, means "beloved" - sometimes wish we had used it as her first name but Katherine is also nice!!!)

I would just like to say, however, that an overtly Scottish first name with an overtly Scottish surname is - imo - naff of the first order of naffness.

We have a Connor (but I know that is quite popular in Scotland at the moment) and Catriona, pronounced Cat-ri-o-na not Ka-tree-na

Why would a Scottish forename not go with a Scottish surname?

Instead of Catherine what about Kathleen or Kitty as a nickname?

My DH is Scottish and our two DC have scottish names, though we are sasernacks (sp)? living well south of the border!

I've got a Scots sounding first name, a Scots gaelic middle-name (one of the above which I never expected to see in a billion years! ), a gaelic surname, a Scottish birth certificate, a Scottish bf and an English accent.

If I had NO connection with Scotland whatsoever it would naff beyond the pale - but my saving grace is that I was actually born there and lived there for a few years. But people are always asking about my names and it can be a pita.

Ross and Elspeth are nice - Shona is lovely too

Why on earth would a Scottish surname not go with a Scottish surname?
Surely Cameron Mclean sounds much better than Pierre Mclean just as a totally random example!

From your original list jacks1972 I like Finlay and Fraser best and Isobel is ok. I don't consider the girls names very Scottish though.

smac Unfortunately it's now the law that every female born MUST be named Grace or Eve. c.f., Jane/Louise for the 70s!
