What do you think of Persephone as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.
Please could you help with this. I'm guessing this is very unusual, am I wrong? How popular is this and what do you think of the name? We're shortening to Sephy or Persy.
Middle names will be Constance Jane.

poncetastic

bellissima · 18/09/2009 21:19

Know one - and she uses her middle name. (which is one of your's!)

Mentioned she gets 'Per-se-phone' (phone as in telephone) when called on official matters.

mrsruffallo · 18/09/2009 21:20

She would constantly be offered pomegranate seeds

GetOrfMoiLand · 18/09/2009 21:20

I like it a lot - but am a lover of classical greek names anyway. However people will mispronounce it so be prepared.

hocuspontas · 18/09/2009 21:23

Why would you want to call a baby girl Percy?

cory · 18/09/2009 21:34

goddess of death- now that's really cheery

gets carried away from her desolate mother by the god of death

pasturesnew · 18/09/2009 21:45

I like it actually

AtheneNoctua · 18/09/2009 21:47

Hope she doesn't lose her belt.

Quattrocento · 18/09/2009 21:47

I do know a persephone

Her parents shortened it lovingly to Sephy

But at school she is Percy

Takes a bit of living up/down to IMO

katnkittens · 18/09/2009 21:51

Sounds like a musical instrument

angelene · 18/09/2009 21:56

Sounds like a feature or benefit on a hifi.

GrimmaTheNome · 18/09/2009 21:58

Only a good name in summer. Liable to suffer from SAD.

Lovely name really but the story is a bit to sad IMO.

pasturesnew · 18/09/2009 22:02

LOL Grimma, yes, she will need one of those special lamps or to split her time between Scandinavia and a tropical island!

LittleWhiteWolf · 18/09/2009 22:04

I like it but only for pets. For a daughter its a bit much, and as people have pointed out, she would get called Percy-phone, rather than Per-Seph-Own-Knee.

tummytickler · 18/09/2009 22:14

I love it - dd2 was going to be Persephone, but we went for Pearl in the end, and now i am a bit as i feel i can't use it now as they are too similar.
We were going to have either

Persephone Sheena or
Persephone Luna Jean (mn all family).

I think Persephone Constance Jane is lovely.
I dont know any Persephones at all, and we were going to use Percy as a nn (I think Percy is very cute on a little girl)

MamaLazarou · 18/09/2009 22:20

Persephone? Oh, please.

navyeyelasH · 18/09/2009 22:22

sounds like pheremone (SP?)

MamaLazarou · 18/09/2009 22:23

It doesn't sound the slightest bit like pheremone!

Georgimama · 18/09/2009 22:26

It's poncetastic and has really sad connetations.

cece · 18/09/2009 22:28

I love it but would never be brave enough to use it...

navyeyelasH · 18/09/2009 22:30

MamaLazarou, my first language is welsh maybe the way I am reading it is wrong. How would you pronounce it?

fruitstick · 18/09/2009 22:33

When we first moved into our house in Chiswick we went out to our local thai restaurant where a couple were their with baby Persephone.

It struck the fear of God into us!

It's a lovely name but very very poncey.

Georgimama · 18/09/2009 22:36

per - seph - on - ee

LaurieFairyCake · 18/09/2009 22:38

It is extremely high on the ponceometer.

really, REALLY high.

BitOfFundango · 18/09/2009 22:40

Too much.

Penelope?
