Do you know an Eliza? What does she get shortened to (if anything?)

And if you don't know an Eliza, but you met one, what might you be tempted to call her (other than Eliza?!)

It's top of my girls list (actually, is the only one on the list at the moment) but want to consider all the things she might end up being called before I go with it. I'm not keen on Liza or Liz - would she be constantly getting either do you think?

Ellie or Liz - although I would probably call her Eliza until I thought she preferred one of the names above.

Pretty name! I think most people go through a nickname stage at some time in their lives - better Liz than something awful!

ChasingSquirrels · 14/08/2009 19:56

I knew one when we lived abroard, she was Australian.
I don't remember anyone shortening it, but the individual will decide what, if any, shortening they are happy with and let people know that (eg I am either my full name or one shortening, I certainly am not another shortening).

Lili - cute as a little girl, but won't work forever, though.

I really like it though, it's quite a grand name but has a down to earth feeling too.

MaggieBeauLeo · 14/08/2009 19:56

I know one who is 7. She was ZaZa as a baby!

blowninonabreeze · 14/08/2009 19:58

I know 1 who's 3 and her mum often calls her Liza,

I think its the only thing I'd be tempted to call her although I don't know if thats just because its what her mum already uses

forkhandles · 14/08/2009 20:03

I know two and neither of them are shortened

chickchickchickee · 14/08/2009 20:03

Lizzie here

2Eliza2 · 14/08/2009 20:12

Extremelybeautifulandveryintelligentandcharming.

;)

In fact Eliza is a shortening of my baptismal name.

jellybeans · 14/08/2009 20:18

I know two, both are 'Izzy'.

My MIL is Eliza and it gets shortened to "Liza".

MrsMattie · 15/08/2009 10:09

I know two Elizas. A little girl that gets called Liza or Ly and a woman who is only ever Eliza.

Kingsroadie · 15/08/2009 10:25

Lize or Lizie (long y on both of those - not like Lizzie). She's our age. I think it's a really nice name. Thing is, even if no one shortens the name it will almost sound like Liza in conversation as the e almost gets swallowed ( from my experience)

EsmeWatson · 18/08/2009 12:23

I have a two year old dd Eliza, who we sometimes shorten to Lizzie, but usually she is just Eliza. I, like you, was worried she may get Liza or Liz so made it pretty clear that she was either Eliza or Lizzie only! Gorgeous name, we get so many positive comments - go for it!

Sagacious · 18/08/2009 12:36

Erm the only Eliza I ever knew had the rather charming nickname Eeeezeee (Easy)

She was rather keen on the boys...

Sagacious · 18/08/2009 12:38

Thinking about it the other was "Dolots"

A rather literal take on Eliza Dolittle.. quite sophisticated for 15 year olds.

deste · 21/08/2009 22:34

The one I know is called Zi-Zi.

mumzy · 22/08/2009 07:22

I know a few Elizas and they never get shortened to anything they're always called Eliza

Littledawley · 22/08/2009 07:26

I know a really lovely Eliza - I was a bit envious when I had my DD that I couldn't use it!! They often call her Lyzee which is sweet.

jellibob · 27/08/2009 20:10

I have an Eliza, and sometimes call her Lyzee, but mostly Eliza.

When we were looking for names, I found a website (American I think, can't remember the address) where people rated their own names and shared their nicknames. There was one that I can't get out of my head but daren't ever say, in case the other DCs or DH start using it..."Fert"!

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 27/08/2009 20:14

I know a grown up Eliza and no one ever shortens her name.

Clary · 28/08/2009 00:44

I know a couple. One is never shortened and the other is sometimes Lizzie I think.

But you know it's led by you. For eg I know a Thomas who I have never called Tom - prob because his mum never does.

Clary · 28/08/2009 00:44

whom I have never called Tom (pedantic )
