How is 'Lucia' pronounced?

Sorry for being a bit thick, but I have recently seen the name Lucia which is a name I am not familiar with. How would you pronounce it?

It is like 'Lucy+ah' (with stress on the 'Lu'), or 'Loo+sha' or 'Loo+sear' (with stress on the 'se') ?

I would say Looshia

steamedtreaclesponge · 12/08/2009 16:43

I've heard it pronounced either as Loo-sha or Loo-chia or Lucy-ah... think it's up to you really!

MamaKaty · 12/08/2009 16:44

I would pronounce it 'Loo-shi-a' but I don't know if that's correct or not!

sweetkitty · 12/08/2009 16:45

Two ways I think the Italian is Loo-CHEE-ah
Spanish is Loo-sha

The Lucia I knowis the former.

PrettyCandles · 12/08/2009 16:48

I've come across it as

LOOSH-ah

and as

Lu-CHEE-ah

Vikelm · 12/08/2009 16:56

Thanks for the replies! Maybe I'll give it a miss - too much scope for people getting the name 'wrong' all the time, no matter which pronounciation we go for!

BunnyLebowski · 12/08/2009 17:02

Actually the Spanish pronounciation of this name is Loo-thee-a.

Gorgeous name.

deepdarkwood · 12/08/2009 17:08

The one I know pronounced it Loo - SEE - ar.
But also Loo- CHE -a when feeling more Italian

Lovely name

FAQtothefuture · 12/08/2009 17:10

the one I know is Loo-chia

MrsKitty · 12/08/2009 17:11

I've always imagined it to be Loo-CHEE-a

Vikelm · 12/08/2009 17:13

deepdarkwood - that's how I imagined it to be pronounced. I really do like it! I'll have to ask my OH when he comes home

I put the stress in the Lu but this is one of those names like Claudia and Clara and Laura which I don't like the English pronunciation but do like in my own language however as I live here I would not give it to my child as would forever cringe at 'mispronunciation'

lovely names though imo

sweetkitty · 12/08/2009 17:13

Yes sorry I was mistaken it is Loo-thee-a

I prefer Loo-CHEE-a the one I know is nicknames Lulu cute in a baby but I don't know in a 40yo

EdnaK · 13/08/2009 10:07

I have an Italian friend with that name and she pronounces it 'Loo - chia'. Lovely name!

KnickKnack · 13/08/2009 10:10

My DD= Lucia, caused so many pronunciation problems! I named her Lucía as I have mexican heritage and I pronounced it 'loo see a'

The latin american pronunciation is loo-see-a, the spanish is loo-thea, and the Italian, is Loo-chee-a

It means 'bringer of light'

maltesermeister · 13/08/2009 11:13

and it's a fabulous name

crumpet · 13/08/2009 11:26

It is a very pretty name. Have only heard LuCHEEA or LuSEEA pronumciations though, never heard of Lusheea (but is this going the same way as Alicia which now only seems to be pronounces Aleesha?)

Flower3545 · 13/08/2009 11:33

Lucia is my confirmation name. Although I never use it (wooden catholic now I'm afraid) I always used to pronounce it Loo-see-a

Vikelm · 13/08/2009 12:12

Thanks guys!

It's a definite maybe if we have a little girl. I love it in combination with Sophie - Sophie Lucia.

my cousin who is 18 is lucia pronounced loo chia as its italian descent.
its one of those names that she'll alwasy ask to be spelt or pronounced, but then it is a pretty name.

Scorpette · 13/08/2009 22:31

I know 2 Lucias, one 35, one 7, and both pronounce it LOOsher. That's Ye Olde English way of pronouncing it

mathanxiety · 14/08/2009 04:11

Loo-sha (emphasis on first syllable) mostly, but I know a Spanish Lucia who pronounces it with the Thpanish lithp, Luthis (Lu-thia, slightly less emphasis on the first syllable).
