Really like 'Malory/Mallorie' but it means 'the unlucky one' - any ideas for something similar?

But not Valerie I'm looking for something more unusual...

So gutted as I love this name, but couldn't give it to my child with a meaning like that!

Any ideas?

Marlowe? - don't know the meaning of it though.

skyblu · 12/08/2009 10:51

"Malloree" means Wild Spirit' in French

Roomfor2 · 12/08/2009 10:55

Marlowe sounds a bit masculine (sorry, should have specified I meant a girl's name, though don't know yet what am having, so actually, Marlowe/Marlow might do it!) Just always thought I would like Malory if had a girl this time..

Ooooh skyblu, Malloree is good - hadn't thought of spelling it like that. Wild spirit might be perfect, if DC2 turns out anything like DC1!

I know a girl called Marlowe. Have just looked it up it means driftwood apparently!

Marnie?

Roomfor2 · 12/08/2009 11:41

Hmmm, the more I think about the more I can hear it now as a girl's name.

Marnie is nice too

Malloree looks silly in English I'm afraid

yama · 12/08/2009 12:19

Malory is the Chief of Staff's daughter in the West Wing.

I like it because of that.

Can you perhaps find out an alternative meaning? I'm sure it has another derivation.

boodleboot · 12/08/2009 12:25

i think we get entirely too het up about meanings....if you like Malory then go for it. How many people in your life ever say 'oooh whats the meaning of your name?'

noone has EVER asked me what my name means....

yama · 12/08/2009 12:28

Good point Boodle. I once found out that my name means 'servant' so I just ignore that meaning.

BlueChampagne · 12/08/2009 12:55

Depends if you can overlook the meaning now you know it, or if it would forever be in the back of your mind.

Marnie is nice

For some reason I think of Gretchen as the same sort of style. I realise it doesn't sound similar but thought it was worth a try!

boodleboot · 12/08/2009 16:02

when i found out my name meant vine i thought it was pretty rubbish and chose to ignore it but then i was reading a bible one day and it said about Jesus being the true vine and we are vines off him and i thought that was lovely and made me like the meaning....even rubbish meanings can be interpreted in a diff way which makes them lovely.....my mum has NO IDEA what my name means and never has.....i just don't think people gave a crap about this sort of thing pre MN!!!

EachPeachPearMum · 12/08/2009 16:04

boodlebot... what does your name mean?

I like Mallory... but no- couldn't use it with that meaning. I do think the meaning of a name is very important.

weegiemum · 12/08/2009 16:07

What about Marsali?

Its a Gaelic version of Marjorie - I know 3, one is 40 and the other 2 are 4. Seems to suit both a little girl and a grown up!

It means 'Pearl' - interestingly, the 3 I know all have fabulous natural white blonde pearly hair!

boodleboot · 12/08/2009 16:33

ha...bugger.

Roomfor2 · 12/08/2009 17:10

Thanks everyone! No, I don't think I can overlook the meaning now I know what it is, I think it would be tempting fate to bestow such a name on my baby... Sounds daft probably, but that's me

Some great suggestions, thank you all. I like Marsali and Marnie - what would Marnie be short for though, or is it not short for anything?

Also, what about Marley for a girl - is that wrong?

I like Marsali too
