how long did it take you to get used to your new babies name?

hi, i gave birth to ds2 a week ago, who is sleeping on me just now hence lack of punctuation, who we have called zach. he was called ben for half an hour then we changed it to zach. his name doesn't roll off my tongue yet though and i keep calling him ds1's name or his nickname from my pregnancy! a few people have given me looks re his name too and i'm worried this has put me off his name a bit...?

just wondering if this is normal, to have a settling in time for a name? or have we picked the wrong name!?

Quite a while, I used to call dc1 Ja Ja and Mookie and other names like that... dc2 was podge, tubs, pudding...

They are their names now of course. It doens#t mean you picked the wrong name!

I used to think, isn't it bizarre, he/she is only maggie/richie because I* decided that! How random. Is it really their name if it's only their name because I selected that from a book????

we called DS1 "he" for quite a while after he was born - I would think it's perfectly normal - you are just getting to know your child and his name

Took me quite a few weeks to get used to ds having a name. I kind of felt that he was just this pure being and didn't need a label iyswim? As he got older he became his name but I felt much like maggie at first, like it was onlt his name cause we decided...

Not sure about your question, but this reminds me of me friends who changed their DS's name after a week because once they started saying it it didn't sound right. As they hadn't registered him it didn;t cause any trouble. I think they may have kept the original name as a middle name.

Took a good couple of weeks
called both DS's 'baby' for ages
Zach is a fab nmae btw!

first three straight away
fourth the name was a compromise and I spent ages calling him 'the baby' and I would sometimes cry when I remembered his name. I have nickname for him now and after about a month I could say his name without consiously having to think about it first

yes i call mine "the baby" a lot too.

i was thinking of changing his name, although he's already registered, but the more time that passes the harder it seemsl
not least because we've had a couple of beautifully embroidered things with his name on already lol

thisisyesterday, can you imagine the name on somebody else's slightly older child? if so, don't worry.

I guess it's like calling milk 'leche' from now on. At first it would seem a bit odd, but eventually it would seem normal if you did it long enough.

Zach is a fab name.
It's just cos you're not used to it yet.
Took us a while to get used to ds name, then someone pointed out that they had a dog of the same name. Cheers.

I called DD the baby for ages and then kept calling her my niece's name! Now, at 16 weeks she completely is her name - Aoife, although I feel for some the spelling will never quite be there!

I love Zach - my first love on Saved by the Bell!!

Zach is a fab name. For a while (a good while, I add) I was very concious of calling out DS's name as people really did (and do!) look around. It is unusual and it is not an English name (even though I am English).

It will become his name if it is the one you have chosen - and it is lovely - and you will get used to it

I love the name Zach. DS3 was going to be Zach at one point (Isaac as a proper name). DS3 is 8 months old, and I'm still not used to his name. It was chosen by DH, and tbh, I'm still not entirely sure I like it. Maybe it's because I never envisaged (sp?) myself with a child with his name? Everyone I know thinks his name is great, but I'm still meh.

Maybe it is the same for you?

My dd is almost 4. I still catch myself trying to call her by my little sister's name. I was nine when my sister was born so I guess she was the first baby I really got to know.

Both names having the same vowel sound may also have something to do with it.

I agree - Zach is a lovely name

The first person we phoned from hospital to say that ds3 had been born said 'Oh be serious. No you haven't' when we told them what we had decided to call him! So, for days after I had this niggle that we had chosen the wrong name, but we loved it and still love it and it suits him now he's grown into it!

It's nothing peculiar by the way - just not what my mummy-dearest would have chosen!

DD2 came 5 weeks early and we had not decided on a name.

On her (very quick) arrival, I suddenly named her - Xmas eve and named Gabriella after the angel. DP added Eve as a middle name just before she was whisked off to NICU.

Not having her with us made it a bit harder to get used to her name (but we sort of expected this - DD1 was 8 weeks early and it took is days to decide on Florrie (Florence)Amelie for her so she was simply Baby X to all the nurses in NICU for ages.)

DP took even longer to get used to DD2's first name as he had had no say in it - he frequently called her something else when phoning NICU for an update!

We then went through a phase of everyone thinking we had named her after HSM character even though neither of us knows anything about that. However, it did make me doubt her name for a while but I figure there are not too many grown ups naming their babies after a kid's movie.

Now she is 7 months old and has really grown into her name which we generally use in full.
