hi, i gave birth to ds2 a week ago, who is sleeping on me just now hence lack of punctuation, who we have called zach. he was called ben for half an hour then we changed it to zach. his name doesn't roll off my tongue yet though and i keep calling him ds1's name or his nickname from my pregnancy! a few people have given me looks re his name too and i'm worried this has put me off his name a bit...?

just wondering if this is normal, to have a settling in time for a name? or have we picked the wrong name!?

Lockets... it's been a while, I know, but you know what my ds is called. It's not Octaaaaaaavius but it does begin with O and is a palindrome (leaving only one possible male name...)

cheesesarnie · 27/07/2009 23:04

ds2 is called tom.in my tired state i kept calling him joseph(which had never been a name we'd had for him),the nurses were saying is he called joseph now.and i was saying no hes tom!ds1 was confused as he'd named him.i just couldnt get the name to click in my head!we did change our mind on his chosen middle name though as it seemed 'too big' for him!and im glad now as it really wouldnt have suited him!

SummerLightning · 27/07/2009 23:07

I think about 2 weeks. It didn't help that DS has an unusualish name that I know my mum doesn't really like. But now it's definitely his name (though it has recently become abbreviated somehow!)

Dysgu lovely name for an XMas eve baby!

MrsEricBana · 27/07/2009 23:10

Yes I am being very harsh re Octavius - I humbly apologise . (am still scarred after watching Wife Swap last night where one set of kids were called River, Indiana and Canyon, and that news story the other week with Carractacus & Boudicca (sp?) - mine are called Peter and Jane obv). Sorry to digress OP - I did practise calling dd by her name for 48 hrs before I properly committed to it as wasn't sure and am still pleased we chose it 6 years later. Love Zach BTW.

Weinstein, is your DS called Otto?

MrsEricBana · 27/07/2009 23:13

Ah that is a great name Winestein, feel free to shout that in a play centre near you any time!

winestein · 27/07/2009 23:26

No need to feel rubbish Lockets - I've not been on regularly in a long time.

Spot on 5... And Eric, I love shouting it out now - it's my son's name and I don't care what people think - or more to the point I don't care about people's negative thoughts

helpivegottogivebirth · 27/07/2009 23:44

it took me about 4 weeks. I kept calling her my niece's name. and even referred to her as 'he' as we were convicned it would be a boy.

Even now, if she is really screaming and i am really fretting i still sometimes think of her as my nieces name - she is now almost 2 months old.

Jas · 28/07/2009 00:19

DS was nameless for a full 6 weeks after he was born. We called him Boy, and once we decided on a more permanent name, it probably took me another 6 weeks to feel it was right.

DD2 was Louise for a day, nameless for a month (called Twinkle) but once we diecided she fitted hers straight away.

DD1 was instantly her (named before she was born)

Tortington · 28/07/2009 00:21

with ds 1 we called him 'the baby' for many many many months.

this is becuase i think we were both in denial that 'the baby' was actually ours forever.

thankfully he has now grown up and fucked off

jellybeans · 28/07/2009 08:33

Took me a while with some and I thought should I have used..... instead. Usually it was because of other people's reactions. BUT I stuck with them and no regrets. Zach is lovely, much nicer than Ben. Many congrats

AramintaCane · 28/07/2009 08:48

never got used to one of mine it just doesn't fit.

notsoteenagemum · 28/07/2009 08:59

Winestein I thought you had called your DS Oxo for a moment there[dumb emoticon]

I was used to DD's nome straight away, we decided it very early on.

DS's name came down to a choice of two, in the delivery room the midwife asked for a boys name and DH said one and I said the other.
We decided on DH's choice and I wasn't sure about it for about 2 months, and spelled it wrong for about that time as well{blush].
I love it now and when I say to DS "we nearly called you Jude"
he says "I'm glad you called me......"
Except for when he first started school and decided he would be called Cassisus Jacob, which was weird because Cassius was my very first choice but DH said no.

minouminou · 28/07/2009 13:13

I picked DS' name in 1992 (he finally arrived 2006), so I was quite used to it by then. DD's name has taken a little bit longer to sink in, mainly because DP chose it, and because we call her by DS's version of it (he can't say it properly).
You'll just find yourself not thinking about it any more.

immediately. It was her name and it suited her straight away.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 28/07/2009 14:24

honestly? about a year, both times!

names seems somehow too serious and too big for such a winkle so I/we tend to make up funny ridiculous nicknames everybody laughs at for the babies. It's only now that dd2 is 16m that I can call her by her full name without feeling that it is not right.

both dds have short and not unusual names btw.

SarfEast · 28/07/2009 14:32

We had lots of names like violet, elizabeth and Catherine on our short list which i really liked but when she was born they all seemed to formal for her. After 4 days of trying different names out we called her Rose which was a middle name choice as it just seemed to fit her. IMO she is a beautiful as a Rose but also as thuggish and as vicious as one too

Zach is a lovely name, maybe you could just play around with it to find a more baby like nickname until he grows into it

ilikeyoursleeves · 28/07/2009 15:19

Thanks for the replies, quite reassuring! Zach is currently still being called Sparky, his nickname all through my pregnancy because he was conceived on Bonfire Night! I'm trying to occasionally call him Zach but it does still feel odd, particularly cos my dad said there is a really horrible vicious dog in their neighbourhood called Zak. Hmmmm thanks

Sleeves, that is the reason I didn't call DS3 Zach. My friend got a dog the week before I had him and called him Zach (her daughter is a big HSM fan)

Weinstein, I love the name Otto. First time I've ever heard it.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 28/07/2009 19:08

sparky is a cute nickname. you should hear ours. both granmas were horrified at first now they all call her with them at times, alongside her real name thankfully.

winestein · 28/07/2009 19:38

Lol at Oxo

If it's any consolation, Sleeves, I have been made aware of a number of dogs called Otto, particularly Dobermans and one notable springer spaniel.

Oh, and the bus driver off the Simpsons...
