you say eh-lynn as in the start of eilidh but with lynn at the end (or like ellen but with a twist )

i have hunted through names websites but cant find it, the most obvious spelling i can think of is eilyn but that does not look pretty enough.

Elin is a welsh name is that what you mean?

Ledodgy · 14/07/2009 16:46

In fact Elin is a scandanavian name (just looked it up) but there are lots in Wales.

detectiveonamission · 14/07/2009 16:48

i dont know, would you say that with the "eh" sound at the start?

Ledodgy · 14/07/2009 16:49

No it's a soft e so maybe not that.
Maybe it's ailin or something?

Ledodgy · 14/07/2009 16:50

saya ailin is a boys name here

Ledodgy · 14/07/2009 16:51

You say the el part of elin like you say the El in Ellen just to clarify.

MrsMcCluskey · 14/07/2009 16:52

is it Aisling?
Irish name?

LaDiDaDi · 14/07/2009 16:54

I've met a child with that name and I'm fairly sure it was spelt Elin. It was a charcter in a children's book that the mother of the one I knew had loved as a child.

LaDiDaDi · 14/07/2009 16:58

It was this book.

shonaspurtle · 14/07/2009 16:59

There's an Irish name Eilin but I think it's pronounced ee-lin.

Mammina · 14/07/2009 17:38

Elin is pronounced with the short 'eh' sound (rather than ay) in Welsh - don't know about the scandinavian way!

MamaKaty · 14/07/2009 17:39

I know someone who says her name like that - she spells it Aileen

Gateau · 15/07/2009 10:08

I think the Irish name Aisling is actually pronounced 'Aylish'.

Macdog · 15/07/2009 10:10

Eilean is from the same form as Eilidh

ExpositionDesMains · 15/07/2009 10:12

I know an Aisling, pronounced Ashleen!

Macdog · 15/07/2009 10:12

Aisling is pronounced Ash-leen as far as I know

Gateau · 15/07/2009 10:14

Oh yes, you're right.
Quite pretty.

Thandeka · 15/07/2009 10:18

Aisling is pronounced Ashling I think- well my friend by that name prnounced it like that.

Hassled · 15/07/2009 10:19

The thing is, if you have no idea how to spell it, nor will anyone else. She'll spend her entire life spelling her name to people - or having it mispronounced.

Gateau · 15/07/2009 10:58

I can identify with that, Hassled. I've had it all my life. And I have vowed not to have my children doing the same.

oopsacoconut · 15/07/2009 11:01

Ebhlin?

Hassled · 15/07/2009 11:06

Gateau - yes, I'm the same - have unspellable/unpronounceable Gaelic name. Looks quite pretty written down, but that's as far as it goes. And as a result my children have very ordinary names - I've worked on the basis that if it's in the Royal family tree somewhere, it's safe .

detectiveonamission · 15/07/2009 13:37

but i love it, will it really really matter if no-one call spell it/ say it

OP posts:
Caz10 · 15/07/2009 13:41

Aisling is Ashling imo

And I know an Elin who is Eeee-Lynn

If you love it it doesn't matter! Some of these baby name websites have little audio files of how the names are pronounced, maybe you could track it down that way?

Fimbo · 15/07/2009 13:42

Elena is also pretty but I guess it would get mixed up with Eleanor.
