you say eh-lynn as in the start of eilidh but with lynn at the end (or like ellen but with a twist )

i have hunted through names websites but cant find it, the most obvious spelling i can think of is eilyn but that does not look pretty enough.

Could it be Aileen? Scottish name pronounced

A-leen.

detectiveonamission · 15/07/2009 14:17

funny thing is i am really not keen on eilidh/ellen/eileen or any of the other similar souning names.

I WANT ey-lynn, it sounds so good with my accent

i actually heard it for the first time on a childrens road safety cd so it much be a "proper" name if they have used it. i wonder if i can email them and ask how they spelt it on the script

The name you are looking for is Eilean

LaDiDaDi · 15/07/2009 17:29

No, no.

It's Elin.

MaggieBeeBeau · 15/07/2009 17:33

It sounds........ problematic!

I love Ellen though.

Macdog · 15/07/2009 17:42

Elin/Eilean are from the same meaning - basically 'Helen' - bright shining one

So it's just really which spelling you prefer

detectiveonamission · 15/07/2009 19:21

on the cd they say that the name means 'island', maybe that was just to fit in with the story though

elin looks the most likely, how does eilynn look

Its spelt Eilean and is gaelic for island. It has nothing to do with being from the same meaning as Helen!!?? Its a beautiful girls name. My wee girl is called Eilean and she really suits it!

Isn't Eilean pronounced ee-lan though?

rusmum · 04/08/2009 10:33

my dd middle name is Ellyn

mathanxiety · 14/08/2009 03:16

Isn't that Mrs Tiger Woods' name?

YouCantTeuchThis · 05/07/2010 16:05

It is gaelic for 'island' but is actually a masculine noun

I do know an Eilean and although she does suit it and it has grown on me, the poor girl is saddled with having to always spell and repeat her name...that would bug me, but some people like that

yellowflowers · 05/07/2010 16:48

I know a welsh Elin - said like the beginning of Ellen but with a lynn sound at the end.

Aims80 · 05/07/2010 17:05

I'm Irish and Aisling is pronounced Ashleen.

nearlymumofone · 05/07/2010 17:52

I have an unusual name- never known or heard of anyone with my name, but i LOVE that. Yes people always pronounce it wrong, they always spell it incorrectly, they always have, but it doesn't stop me from loving it. Go with the unusual name, your child will thank you for it. I'm trying to find an unusual girls name at the moment that I like as much as my own!!

archstanton · 05/07/2010 17:58

Eilean is usually pronounced aylynn. And although Aisling is usually Ashleen I have heard that pronounced Ayleen before.

mathanxiety · 05/07/2010 18:20

Eilis would be pronounced Eye-lish or Ay-lish, not 'Aisling' or 'Ashleen'.

Oilean (with a fada on the a) is 'Il-awn', Irish for island. Can't reproduce the soft L sound here very well -- it's more like ilyawn.

UndomesticHousewife · 05/07/2010 18:30

Aylin.

UndomesticHousewife · 05/07/2010 18:31

Or do you mean Ellyn

WillbeanChariot · 05/07/2010 18:39

I know a welsh Elin- pronounced Eh-leen. It's got a hat on the i which makes a long sounds.

PlasticCenturion · 05/07/2010 18:44

I'm guessing she's had the baby by now...

catbus · 05/07/2010 22:16

Just to clarify; Aisling is ASH LING. I would definetly know!! Ashleen is a totally different name.
