Quentin or Hugo

We're expecting a boy at the end of October and have managed to narrow our name choice down to our two current favourites: Quentin and Hugo.

Our dd is Annabel.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

When did Jamie become a posh boy's name?

Really, are Quentin and Hugo regarded as that 'pretensious' in the UK?

Apart from them being quite common in France (and becoming more popular in Germany), I assumed people associate Quentin with Quentin Tarantino... quite the opposite .

Jamie is ok, but won't work in German or French...

what about wolf, short for wolfgang? i blooming love that name. wolf, wolfie, wolfgang, all superb.
quentin and huge deffo loaded with class horror and will open up boys to bullying unless they go to public school. the same could be said for wolfie, i suppose, but you'll have the 'forrin' factor to help him cool it out.

If I saw the name Quentin on my son's class list, I would assume his parents were toff to the point of embarassing oblivion or footballer and WAG-esque - I'd lean more towards the latter.

How about George - it oozes respectability and works for French and German?

I wanted to call DS3 Otto (DP is halb German) but we chose something else in the end. Otto is gorgeous.

Quentin makes me think of the evil Uncle Quentin in Enid Blyton storie.

If it just made me think of Quentin Crisp as played by John Hurt it would be ok -- always assuming you wanted your son's life to be a challenge for him.

Aitch you are right about Wolf. Brilliant name. If I handn't opted for invisibilising names sfor my sons I'd have been tempted by Wolf.

Why not use a nice French or German name? Us Brits are really quite cosmoploitan now, and we can handle things like that.

Most of my dd's classmates have Native American Indian names so times have changed

There are such beautiful french names - I've always loved Xavier but it wouldn't have suited our very British surname.

I love Quentin! I think it's one of those old man names (like Arthur, Stanley) that is becoming more popular again. I know 2 under five.

I would think the younger generation has never heard of Quentin Crisp. I think for them Quentin Tarantino is much more relevant.

Blyton's Uncle Quentin was not evil, just a little absent-minded and intolerant of dogs.

I love Hugo, and Hugs for a baby is so sweet

I think Quentin is relatively common in the US - certainly within the top 300-400 most popular baby names, so I doubt that Quentin Tarantino was bullied because of his name being 'unusual' or 'rare'.

Also, isn't Quentin Richardson a famous US basketball player?

Just saw this thread and thought I'd add my (biased) opinion. My ds is Quentin and we still love the name! So far in school we've had only good experiences - he is very happy, very popular and likes having an unusual initial (Q) .

I love Hugo, DP wouldn't let me call DS that though as he thought it was too posh.

And there is always the lovely Quentin Blake as an association that might mean something for the children themselves.

Love both names! They're certainly upper-class but definitely not WAG in any sense.

I think that the class connotations are no where near as rigid as they have been. Loads of people are now called Olivia/Amelia/Sophia which a few years ago were never in the popular lists...
Our DD is Hermione, so we hope that they go together.
We have more problems if it's another girl though...!!
