Any opinions on Campbell for a boy?

Think we have our girl name sorted, but are struggling with finding another boys name we both like (already have one DS)
...Interested peoples thoughts on Campbell?

Grandfather (born 1890s) was a Campbell and so is cousin. Know a few people called C'bell but agree with clemette, I think there has to be a Scottish connection (at least a surname) for it to work.

It has not yet gained the widespreadness (??) of Cameron, Callum etc.

I love, love, love it. It is a fab name. I wanted it for ds, sadly dh wasn't keen and our surname starts with C and it sounded silly.

Please use it. I urge you!!

We are using Campbell as a middle name- it is DH's tartan. I like the name but not so much as to use it for a first name, it also clashes with the surnames...still need that first name though!

I love Hamish, Duncan, Bruce, Douglas, Fergus, Gregor, Magnus... loads of fabulous Scottish names.

some are, yes, and i don't like surnames as first names. That was my opinion.

I think Cam and Bell are two quite feminine sounds and given that MacKenzie (a family name of mine) and Kennedy and Delaney (all Scottish and Irish surnames names) are being used for girls in the states, I could see Campbell being taken up for girls in America.

People with Irish/Scottish ancestry in America are doing this..

I doubt very much anyone in Engerland is going to like it. I imagine the majority of MNr's are English so therefore the majority answer will be no.

I'm Irish! with 2 Scottish grandparents and fwiw I think it's 'orrible as a first name. I like Bruce, Donald, Hector, Hamish, Douglas and Duncan and all those names. Callum and Fergus are nice too but the creches are full of them!

Maybe you think its 'orrible' you are entitled to your opinion, but I like it.

My ds has a middle name on your list which is often slated on here.

I'm scottish and I am not really keen on surnames as first names. Don't know why, but I suppose there are plenty of names which are more used (Stewart, Scot...).

If you like it, go for it. There are far worse things to call a child...

I'm not a fan of Campbell as I'm from the other clan but I do know of two baby Campbells and one old one (My Dad's age).
It is generally a surname but it can be used as a first name and I don't see that that is a problem. If you like it use it.
Yes there is Cameron Diaz in America but most Camerons are boys. I can't see Campbell going that way myself but never say never !

i really like it - my friend married a 'campbell' - we were all at uni in glasgow together and he was thoroughly scottish admittedly - but hey, 'scottish heritage' is enough for me. go for it!

It's not ridiculous - everyone has different opinions, you could argue that any name is ridiculous.

Actually that comment has really riled me and I am going now.
