kind of heavy name campbell's soup comes to mind
have known a few campbells not unheard of as first name
welsh names are lovely too, what sounds good round your way ask about more unusual names

its on our short list but we are scottish and living in scotland so possibly more acceptable here.
I have to laugh at some of comments here saying 'no its a surname' and quoting alternatives such as Cameron, Donald, Bruce, Scot Stewart etc all of which are also surnames!!! As many others have pointed out a LOT of boys names are or have been surnames!
I wouldn't worry too much about trends in America, after all Cameron is more of a girls names there but is definitely a boys name here.

I think Campbell is a fab name!!

Thanks for all opinions-appears to be a bit of a love it or hate it kind of name... Was expecting a few 'soup' references, but was surprised by the 'ridiculous' comment- I didn't think it was that much of an unusual choice!

When I say 'Scottish heritage' I don't mean that my second cousin three times removed lived in Edinburgh for 3 months or anything quite as far-fetched as that- Although I live in Wales, and was born in England, the rest of my entire family (both sides) are Scottish -in fact up to about 10 yrs ago myself and my brother were the only members of the family to have been born south of the border! (So i'd like to think if I do choose Campbell we'll be able to carry it off )

Fimbo Thanks for keeping up the defence of the name! You clearly love it - is a shame you can't use it

I don't go for surname-first names either.

But I didn't think of soup

I know a Scottish Campbell. In fact I know quite a few Scots with surnames for first names, it's hardly uncommon there is it? Some surnames work better than others too I admit.
