Opinions on Cedric please

I am loving Cedric at the moment - it is my top spot (still need to convince dh).
What do you think?
Do you think the Harry Potter association will make it popular (I havent read it so dont know how central the character is).
I would hate it to be the new Archie or Alfie or whatever!

When I was 7, my friend Sharon (yes, I know, I'm old) used to do a monologue with a fake lisp which began

"Thedric wath a Caterpillar
Thedric wath my Friend.
Latht time I thaw Thedric he wath THITH big"

(he eats stuff, and at the end "Thedric" is "Thick").

(On reflection, it might have been "Thethil" who was the caterpillar. In any case, have mercy.)

Nope -- not for me. I am not a "cedric" fan. Nor a quentin one for that matter. And I am not entirely convinced people would buy from a cedric over a jack and a Tom. So nope, not a fave of mine... but just my opinion

I'm pretty sure there's a cartoon character called Cedric who's very unpleasant. I think he's an ant-eater or something like that.

I think it's a lovely name. I like those traditional names and think it's a change from all those "fashionable but so commonly used" ones.

I know a Cedric and he's really good looking, successful and a perfect gentleman.

Mind, he is from a Chinese family and it's common to have a "British" name that's a bit traditional (also know people with alternative names like Dorothy and Neville).

Names are what you make them.

Cory, yes, I think you're right too. But the point holds; can't bear names that get hideously distorted by accent/speech impediment. Thethil/Thedric/Effl/Ediff come to mind. (And, ghastly thought, how would someone with a lisp and an estuary 'th' manage Thedric Thmiff )

(And before anyone accuses me of insensitivity, I have difficulty with R's, and one of my names begins with it. I hate not being able to say my own name reliably.)

Would he really be that put out though? I dont thoink kids make nearly such a big thing about names as the parents. dd goes to school with Daffodil, Tiger Susan etc and doesnt bat an eyelid!
Is it not Cyril Sneer the cartoon character form the Racoons that you are thinking of?

am all for "oldie" names - Freddie, Billy, even Walter at a push but CEDRIC? NOOOOO!!

Wigglesworth - I don't put Gordon, Graham and Brian in the same league as Cedric at all ? What makes you say that. I know lots of Gordons, Grahams and Brians my age and I only know one Cedric and he is an old man. I really think of Cedric as an old man name and not one I like at all.
