Hello
I am loving Cedric at the moment - it is my top spot (still need to convince dh).
What do you think?
Do you think the Harry Potter association will make it popular (I havent read it so dont know how central the character is).
I would hate it to be the new Archie or Alfie or whatever!

Opinions please

It sounds weedy to me, sorry

ProfMargotBeauregarde · 12/05/2009 19:16

Because they are both so, so, so, so, so, so ridiculous and horrible and nerdy.

I like unusual names myself, but omg, Cedric? Quentin?

missmiss · 12/05/2009 19:21

I love it.

Tinker · 12/05/2009 20:06

I don't think of Cedric as a masculine name.

Greensneeze · 12/05/2009 20:07

"ridiculous and horrible and nerdy" that's horrible!

What are your kids called, Butch and Bazza?

tummytickler · 12/05/2009 20:35

I love Nerds. I have had many an interesting evening in the company of nerds/geeks/bottles og wine!
I would rather have a nerd, than a cider swilling yob .

Cedric it is then

They are called Richie and Margot, and plenty of people hate those names.

Cedric and Quentin are in a whole new league of geek chic though.

tummytickler · 12/05/2009 20:49

Oh i love Margot - so glam! Ds has a little friend called Margot, she is lovely!

Thanks tummytickler. People are allowed to dislike them though!! I don't mind.

ProfMargotBeauregarde · 12/05/2009 20:52

is your ds's friend Margot nearly 7?

kittywise · 12/05/2009 20:53

no, horrible, sounds like someone who is asking to get picked on

tummytickler · 12/05/2009 21:09

Yes she is! Why? Do you think you know her too?

Norman. Got to be the best geek chic name.

Poppity · 13/05/2009 10:31

Margot is a totally brilliant name, DH calls me that when I'm being 'lovably snobbish' (his words...)

mayanna123 · 13/05/2009 14:08

I love Cedric! (and Quentin and Margot for that matter).

FlappytheBat · 13/05/2009 14:13

What about Torquil or Tarquin, quite fancy an unusual name for hypothetical dc3, who will be a boy!

seeker · 13/05/2009 14:31

So long as it's for a hypothetical ds that's fine!

mayanna123 · 13/05/2009 14:35

Agree that Torquil or Tarquin are suitable only for a hypothetical ds! Not keen at all on them!

19fran76 · 13/05/2009 14:40

I like Cedric.

seeker · 13/05/2009 14:46

I think that before you decide on a name, imagine yourself a spotty, shy 11 year old who hasn't done your growing yet so that you're a foot shorter than your peers. Now imagine it's your first day at Secondary school. 3 year 9s come up to you in the corridor. They are huge and tall and so cool you want to faint. They say "Hey, you, what's your name?"

Now imagine how you feel in the moments before you say "Cedric"

mayanna123 · 13/05/2009 14:54

If three year 9s come up to a shy, small spotty 11 year old they will bully him regardless of his name!

More importantly, imagine yourself as a succesful businessman and introducing yourself as Cedric (as opposed to Jack or Tom) - your clients and colleages will remember you much more easily than if you were yet another Jack, Tom or Mike!

totalmisfit · 13/05/2009 15:36

makes me think of Cedric Daniels from The Wire

Who is definitely some people's cup of tea, though in my case only with his shirt off!

19fran76 · 13/05/2009 15:39

I grew up with an unusual name. You are going to be picked on for being different because of it. I didn't enjoy some of the experiences much at the time but I've given my daughter an unusual name because I think you can learn lots of positive things from those experiences e.g. not to be scared of being different, that it's more important to be yourself than to "fit in", empathy for others who are bullied due to difference. Of course you can learn all this through other means but having a "strange" name gives you a crash course! Agree with Mayanna that children will only find something else to pick on anyway & yep, you do get remembered more easily as an adult (or so it seems).

DownyEmerald · 13/05/2009 15:41

awful

Tinker · 13/05/2009 18:01

I suppose he could call himslef Ced or Ric. In fact, I'm pretty sure that is what he'd end up being called..
