Baby names used on dogs!

I've noticed a lot of people giving out that their children's names are also the names of local dogs. Or they are reluctant to use a name because there's a dog with that name around and they're not sure if they're picking a 'dog's name'. I think it's because these days, a lot of people are replacing having babies with getting a dog, and they take it really seriously and treat it like a human. when i think of the dogs i know, they all have the names that people would have given their kids.

maybe there should be a yearly chart of most popular dogs names to make sure you arent going with the hounds trend of choice.

i know dogs called jake, george, rosie, penny, jack, benny, billy, ted, archie, sam, all popular names for babies i think

My dogs name is Billy, my Aunt has just used the name we had picked for our new son for her puppy Think we will still use it though as we don't see them often.

The dog we adopted from the rescue home is called Sara. When I told people this, many of them said "Oh, but what if you want to give that name to your DD in the future?" Lucikiy it's not a name I would choose, but it is a bit strange to see a woman called Sara and then shout out for my dog!

If it had been my choice I would have chosen a more "doggy" name for her.

My dog is Freddie. Got him after years of unsuccessful ttcing when we assumed we'd never have children. I loved the name and wanted to use it. Regret it now - would have loved to use it for one of the dcs.

I know dogs called Toby, Isabel, Maisie, Oscar, Molly, Millie, Ben, Jack, Archie, amongst others. Almost all belong to people in their 30s who don't have children.

Not dogs - but my best friend's cat is called Rufus - which would also be DH's choice for any DS

I also know two cats called Tilly

kidcreoleandthecoconuts · 24/04/2009 11:57

My dogs are called Ruby and Holly both named by me. Ruby because DP said I couldnt call DD it and I loved the name. And Holly because we got her around xmas time.
It didnt occur to me to give them doggie names.

when I told one (male) friend what we ad called DS3 (Oscar) he said "good name - for a dog".....

We had a dog called Sam when I was a child - I didn't know any human Sams at the time. I reckon although baby names go in fashions, dog names don't - hence the blurring now.

beanieb · 24/04/2009 12:00

my OH's brother is called Oliver and was named after a dog they had!

PrammyMammy · 24/04/2009 12:11

lol my own name has been mentioned as a dogs name. My friend called his my name too.
Our dog is called Missy, kind of doggy.

Tommy · 24/04/2009 12:15

hasn't Gareth Gates just called his daughter Missy?

ArcticLemming · 24/04/2009 12:17

Many years ago I used to work with a family where both the son and the dog were called Dean

suwoo · 24/04/2009 12:20

I knew someone that had an alsation called Sarah {shock]. Thats just wrong isn't it?

suwoo · 24/04/2009 12:20

obviously.

Vulgar · 24/04/2009 12:29

Ds's friend has a cat called Sarah which is odd but I kinda like it.

Celebs seem to like naming their DC's with pet's names, don't they? Honey, Petal, Missy ,etc.

MrsHappy · 24/04/2009 12:34

I know dogs or cats called Jack, Wilf, Toby, Amelie, Sarah, Sophie and George.

I intend to get my revenge by calling DC2 Rover.

pranma · 24/04/2009 14:41

my dogs were Maisie and Oscar

southeastastra · 24/04/2009 14:43

there was a dog for rehoming in the local centre called dave

LilRedWG · 24/04/2009 14:43

My dog when I was a child was Lucy and my cat now is Joseph, admittedly called because it was the only boys name DH and I liked (pre-children) and the cat was not coming home with the name the CPL had given him - Tubs.

LilRedWG · 24/04/2009 14:46

DH's best mate had a cat called Dave - he was one cool cat!

MsMargotBeauregarde · 24/04/2009 15:45

Anything goes for a pet. I know people who've even called their cat Steve in a kind of ironic way. So, anything from Bruno to Steve really works on a dog/cat.

I think people use names they love for their pets. If they have no more children to name, or don't have children then naming a pet is a real 'outlet' for that urge to name iyswim!

RachieB · 24/04/2009 15:50

lol @ sarah / sara / sophie for a dog!

McDreamy · 24/04/2009 15:50

I knew a guy that called his cat Kevin! Our dog is called Tom - shame because I think we might have called DS Tom but he is Ben instead - popular dogs name and our cat is called Charlie, oh and DD called her hamster Daniel!!!!!

noddyholder · 24/04/2009 16:01

My cats are silver and george

YanknCock · 24/04/2009 16:03

My last dog was called Jack. I was calling after him on a beach once, and about 50 little boys all looked up!

The dog before him was called Rhett Butler, not common for dog or child.

Also knew a Sophie the Rottweiler, and my dad's dogs are called Norman, Haley, and Missy.

YanknCock · 24/04/2009 16:04

Oh, and our elderly hamster is called George.
