Baby names used on dogs!

I've noticed a lot of people giving out that their children's names are also the names of local dogs. Or they are reluctant to use a name because there's a dog with that name around and they're not sure if they're picking a 'dog's name'. I think it's because these days, a lot of people are replacing having babies with getting a dog, and they take it really seriously and treat it like a human. when i think of the dogs i know, they all have the names that people would have given their kids.

maybe there should be a yearly chart of most popular dogs names to make sure you arent going with the hounds trend of choice.

i know dogs called jake, george, rosie, penny, jack, benny, billy, ted, archie, sam, all popular names for babies i think

I had a rabbit called Martyn.

My brother has a mouse called Simon, a cat called Chris and a dog called Alf.

All good names I think.

I wanted to call ds2 Sam, but we couldn't use it because we've named one of our dogs that. My dh did consider changing our poor dogs name, but he's had it for 5 years so it seemed a bit cruel
Our hounds are called Sam and Baxter. We called ds2 Luke instead ds1 is called Ben, and our neighbour has a dog called that.

My dogs growing up (named by my parents) were all people names...Hannah, Maggie, Annie, Lucy, Emma. Now they have a Jack, Gabby, and Emmett. My own dog's name is Brinkley...not sure if that's "doggy"? I'd never name a person that at least!

There was a dog called Mia outside Sainbury's this week, there are a lot of 4/5 year olds called Mia in this area.

piscesmoon · 24/04/2009 16:35

I know, or have known dogs, called Dave, Emily, Lucy, Charlie and Connie.
I have known cats called Lydia, Patrick, Rupert, Hermione, Ruby and Gilbert.

Very often I see names on here that I would only give to a pet-mainly ones like Stanley and Elsie.

My best friend accidentally called her new pooch (half Chihuahua half Jack Russell) Alfie after we told her thats the name we've picked if bump is a boy.
Shes buying us a LOT of pretty baba clothes to make up for it!

Twims · 24/04/2009 16:42

Nevermind people names for animals...

Have you noticed more and more people are using animal names for their children?

Felix..?

Max..?

Rufus...?

piscesmoon · 24/04/2009 16:59

Is there such a thing as 'an animal name'?
You very quickly run out if you keep to names like Tiddles and Rover.

Nekabu · 24/04/2009 17:42

People call their children by 'pet' names too though. Honey, Bluebell, Daisy, Poppy, Velvet - all are quite common animal names that are now used for children.

lunamoon2 · 24/04/2009 23:22

This thread is hilarious.
I let my dd name our cat "Rosa" after a friend she had at playschool.

Do you think the reverse will happen ie people naming their children after popular pet names.
Examples could be:
Rover
Stripe
Spotty
Fluffy
Snowy

I called my dog Pixie - one of my reasonings being it would prevent me calling a future dd Pixie - because I do go through phases of thinking that would be cute!

thell · 25/04/2009 01:24

I know you probably don't need encouraging, but I quite like Pixie!!

Yes, naming pets is a good outlet for that kind of avant garde name you're just dying to give to someone!
I know a couple with two pugs called Vader and Padme
Padme is such a lovely name, but perhaps a bit too geeky for an actual child.

i had a Pixie Chihuahua. now i have cats Vinnie, Willie, and Jack Russel named TJ. my parents still have a childhood dog named Layla. we wish now we had reserved Willie, but it quite suits him. i had a cat named Lily, but she ran away. does that mean that name is free for baby naming now?

Rachybabes · 28/04/2009 21:36

Our dog is called Lily !!, such a commom name for girls now xx

MmeLindt · 28/04/2009 21:40

My neighbours dog is called Kafka and their cats are Boris and Natasha. I like that.

Our dog is called Daphne, a name that I am confident will make a comeback sometime soon.

ilovepeppapig · 03/05/2009 22:36
