Is Cassie really short for Catherine?

Hi there - currently really struggling with a name for DD2 due in a couple of months (at least we think its a DD...). DD1 is Isobel Eve, which we love but regret giving her Eve as a middle name as we love that as well and can't really think of any other girls names we like this time round! (although DD1 calls herself Babybel )

For DD2 we've come up with:

Cassie, which we both like as its safe but unusual IYSWIM - but Catherine as registered name as like having a grown up alternative for later in life, plus lots of other possible variations (ie keeps our options open). But, is Cassie really short for Catherine? I always thought it was short for Cassandra (which I don't like)?
A further potential problem is that a friend (NCT friend, not a close bosum buddy) has called her DD1 Katherine, known as Katie, so would she be if I've 'stolen' her name, urgh?

Zoe - but DH thinks it sounds 'funny'

Holly - but she's due in June, so not very seasonal

Laura - not really on the list, as not very exciting, but we can't agree on anything else

Help! Any thoughts welcome!

I don't know whether it is short for Catherine - I have never heard that before.

Btw, I don't like Cassandra either so was just going to register them as Cassie from the start.

(My mum actually breathed a sigh of relief I think when DS2 turned out to be DS2 as she hates the name )

Cassie is definitely for Cassandra. To use it for Catherine would be like saying We're calling her Nicola, with nn Debbie (only not quite so absurd!)
I love both Cassandra and Catherine....Cassie stands better on its own than Cathy I reckon....
Like Zoe a lot. Like Holly too (but it's a bit popular for me) Laura is a good classic.

I know a (grown-up) Cassie whose full name is Catherine. Why not, if you like it? If she doesn't like Cassie as she grows up, then she will have lots of other options for shortening Catherine. Never mind the friend - it's your choice and anyway I think if you call her Cassie it's quite different.

Yes, Cassie can be a nickname for Catherine. It's one of these old, slightly odd ones that are hard to work out.

Like Nancy for Anne or Agnes, or the many, many versions of Margaret (May, Daisy, Pearl etc)

Can be Cassiopoeia the 'blessed damozel'not sure of that for a baby though!I have also heard Cassilda.

Really don't worry about the NCT friend thinking you have stolen her DD's name. You will regret it if that's your reason for not using it.

That's given me a bit of reassurance we could do the Cassie/Catherine thing, although I might have to think a bit more as its obviously not that common an abbreviation. Never knew Daisy/Pearl was short for Margaret - how on earth??!! Interesting suggestions of Cassiopoeia or Cassilda, but we're just not that brave!

Muffle - up until recently I felt so enormously horribly pregnant that my stomach was going to explode in a dramatic fashion like mr creosote, but baby has dropped down now, so feeling much more comfortable (although baby's head further down = different and interesting new symptoms...). Maybe I need to think of something new (any suggestions...?!)

Yes, Peggy is another NN for Margaret. Never heard of Daisy and Pearl being Margaret diminutives tho.

Don't know about Pearl but Daisy is because Margaret is related to Margarita which is another name for a daisy.

To my ears, it sounds like an abbreviation for Cassandra too.

I've got a Cassie, short for Catherine!
But it is short for Cassandra/Cassiopoeia really. We just preferred Catherine.

I always understood that Cassie is short for Catherine or Cassandra. Molly, in my experience (I work with the elderly) is short for Mary. Margaret is shortened to Peggy or Joyce (!!)

Laura is a classic name, simple and pretty (I'm biased though, 'tis dd's name).

Catherine is lovely too with lots of shorter nick names. I like this too.

I think Cassandra sounds lovely, but it has a negative meaning (can't quite remember it though!). I do like the nick name Sandy though.
