Is Cassie really short for Catherine?

Hi there - currently really struggling with a name for DD2 due in a couple of months (at least we think its a DD...). DD1 is Isobel Eve, which we love but regret giving her Eve as a middle name as we love that as well and can't really think of any other girls names we like this time round! (although DD1 calls herself Babybel )

For DD2 we've come up with:

Cassie, which we both like as its safe but unusual IYSWIM - but Catherine as registered name as like having a grown up alternative for later in life, plus lots of other possible variations (ie keeps our options open). But, is Cassie really short for Catherine? I always thought it was short for Cassandra (which I don't like)?
A further potential problem is that a friend (NCT friend, not a close bosum buddy) has called her DD1 Katherine, known as Katie, so would she be if I've 'stolen' her name, urgh?

Zoe - but DH thinks it sounds 'funny'

Holly - but she's due in June, so not very seasonal

Laura - not really on the list, as not very exciting, but we can't agree on anything else

Help! Any thoughts welcome!

Zoe can be short for Elizabeth ( certainly in the elderly population I work with).

I thought Peggy was a nn for Margaret as it rhymed with Meggie?

I knew an old lady once who was called Mary but some of her family called her Polly. I never worked that one out.

i don't see a prob with calling here Eve TBH if you love it but i understand you not wanting to as my daughter is ellie mae and i love mae but don't want to use it again. have you considered a name like Evelyn or Eveline? you can call her Eve for NN but its not her full name? LIke Evelyn Rose or something?

I'd chat to the friend, just to make sure - but otherwise I'd go for it. I have a DD Katherine n Katie, and tbh, if someone wanted to name their DD Catherine (Cassie) too, I'd be flattered, but also would probably appreciate them just checking first - think its just manners you know (I did that when we were looking at boys names and we had one similar to a friend's son!) The only thing I'd be about is Cassie as the nn. So pretty - wish I had thought of that!

I work with a Cassie and she doesn't really like it because people constantly mishear and call her Cathy/Carrie/Katie. She also has to spell out her name all the time. She is often known as Cass, or Casserole (which sends her insane!)

Her name is most definitely short for Cassandra - as in the greek myth woman who could see into the future.

My little sister is usually Cassie and her 'proper' name is Caroline. She's now living in South America though so rapidly becoming 'Carolita'.

Argh, so many variations! I might change my mind and go for something short just so it doesn't get so confusing!! Why don't babies come with names attached, it would be so much easier. Or maybe we should do the Native American thing of naming them after the first thing we see (I suppose 'birth stirrups' might not sound so good though ).

I like Laura but if you're worried about it being a bit boring how about Laurel, Laurie, Lorelei, Lorenza, Lorelle, Lorena or Lauretta.

In answer to your question yes it is definitely a nickname for Catherine.

I've got a 6 month old Cassie!!

She's named after my grandma who died in 07 just before I got pregnant.

She was Catherine and was only ever called Cassie by her family.

It's quite common in Ireland (where I'm from) or at least it was - my gran was 84 when she died so had the nickname since she was born in 1923!

It's a beautiful name. Cute on a baby but equally lovely on a wee girl and an adult. It's unusual without being made up and it's just a pretty, sweet, feminine name!

Cassie is traditionally short for Cassandra. However, I do know two Catherine's who are called Cass/Cassie. I think if you spell the name Katherine then the transition to Cassie is a bit of a stretch. But it works for Catherine.

I'm pretty certain that Cassie is historically a short for Catherine, so no problems there I don't think. And I also don't see why you shouldn't use Eve if you like it. I know sister where the younger one has the elder one's middle name as her fist name, it's never bothered them at all, they like the fact that they share the name.

Cassie is definitely short for Cassandra - she who was given the gift of forecasting events but the downside was that she was destined never to be believed!
