Which of these girls names do you prefere?

Hi, I know exactly what name I'd give a little boy, Oliver. I'm very undecided about a girls name. What do you think of these names ?

Matilda- Tilly for short.

Emilia- Milly for short.

Briony- I don't think you can shorten it. "B" ?

I'd have Rose as a middle name for all of them.

What do you think? I think I prefere Matilda.

It's quite tricky as I'd like something classy but not pretencious, lady like but not too popular and something that an be shortened to something sweet for when she's little. If you have any other suggestions I'd like to hear them. I like the idea of old English names too.

emilia rose is pretty

weepootleflump · 12/02/2009 10:17

Matilda/Tilly, but I'm biased .

Don't like Briony at all.

Don't like Emilia either though Amelia/Milly is lovely.

I also quite like Tabitha. (Tabby for short) It does make me think of the cat in the Beatrix Potter story Mrs Tabitha Twitchet.

I liked Amelia too, but someone said it was too common now so I thought I'd try Emilia.
Thinking about it, I do prefere Amilia too.

my dd is called amelia and gets called meely, not milly.only because ds couldnt say her name when he was little and called her meely!

weepootleflump · 12/02/2009 10:22

Depends where you live whether it's common though. I just think it looks nicer written than Emilia. Emilia makes me think of Emilio Estevez.

Sheeta · 12/02/2009 10:23

Matilda is lovely

weepootleflump · 12/02/2009 10:23

buffy, the Amelia I know is called meely too- I think it's lovely .

Hassled · 12/02/2009 10:24

seeker · 12/02/2009 10:25

Matilda. Lovely.

mummyloveslucy · 12/02/2009 10:26

No one has said they don't like Matilda so far, which is good. Or are you all just being polite?

I like Briony. I like Matilda as well but Tilly is a bit mousey so probably wouldn?t go for it. Not keen on Emilia. Tabitha is gorgeous.

If you don?t want too popular then i would rethink Rose. Every other girl seems to have this as the middle name.

Buda · 12/02/2009 10:37

I think Emilia is really pretty. I have a friend here with a DD called Emilia and they call her Mia for short.

Knew a Briony who was called Bri for short.

Really like Matilda/Tilly.

mummyloveslucy · 12/02/2009 10:42

I like the fact that Tilly sounds mousey. I was always nick named Becky mouse when I was little, I liked it.
I don't mind that the middle name is common, I just think it goes with it and sounds nice.

I like Matilda best. I do like Briony but I would spell it Bryony.

SlartyBartFast · 12/02/2009 10:42

edith is nice.
eddy for short

mummyloveslucy · 12/02/2009 10:45

I know a lovely Bryony, I've always loved her name. I think if she wasn't very nice I might think differently.

I don't like Edith at all, I think it is definatly and old womans name aqnd Eddy is far too boyish.
I had a great aunt Edith so please don't take offence if you have a daughter called Edith.
