Which of these girls names do you prefere?

Hi, I know exactly what name I'd give a little boy, Oliver. I'm very undecided about a girls name. What do you think of these names ?

Matilda- Tilly for short.

Emilia- Milly for short.

Briony- I don't think you can shorten it. "B" ?

I'd have Rose as a middle name for all of them.

What do you think? I think I prefere Matilda.

It's quite tricky as I'd like something classy but not pretencious, lady like but not too popular and something that an be shortened to something sweet for when she's little. If you have any other suggestions I'd like to hear them. I like the idea of old English names too.

i was thinking eddy, pronounced, eeeeeeeeedie.

but you hate dont like it. fair enough.

Lizzylou · 12/02/2009 10:54

I love Briony/Bryony

Matilda is lovely, but I know a fair few around here now

Cies · 12/02/2009 10:54

I like Emilia most. Matilda is very popular, but I'm really not keen (sorry).

Briony is nice, but a very different type of name I think.

mummyloveslucy · 12/02/2009 10:57

I do like some old lady names like Martha, Violet, Alice etc.
eeeeeeeedie does sound better than Eddy.

I love Martha but dh didn't.

mummyloveslucy · 12/02/2009 11:01

What makes Bryony a very different type of name? Is it dated?

I asked my Husband what names he liked and he said he came up with Hannah, sophie and Emily. He also likes Tilly and Tabitha as there are two lovely girls at my daughters nursery with these names.

But why Bryony not Briony? It's like spelling Rose, Rowse, or Daisy, Daisee!

Grammaticus · 12/02/2009 11:25

Katherine could be Katie when she's little.

Grammaticus · 12/02/2009 11:26

Are you pregnant then, MLL?

Katiestar · 12/02/2009 11:37

I have a Catherine and an Alice ,so I guess I'm biased towards those !
Trouble with Catherine/Katherine is that there are so many ways of spelling it

chaya5738 · 12/02/2009 11:53

I like Emilia and Matilda but not Briony.

Emilia is a region in Italy

pixiemoon · 12/02/2009 13:20

Matilda - lovely, and Tilly is lovely

Emilia - I'd assume you were Italian/some kind of Italian connection, think it'd continually be mistaken for Amelia too. Amelia/Milly is a lovely name though.

Briony - I think it's very pretty in itself, although I know a horrible girl called Briony so it's spoilt for me!!! Her nickname is 'Bri' by the way (to rhyme with 'try' not 'tree') which isn't pretty. 'B' is a cute nickname though. How about

mummyloveslucy · 12/02/2009 13:35

Seeker- I wasn't sure how to spell Briony. I'm sure the girl I knew spelt it Bryony.
I'd have to make sure I had the correct spelling. I'm not keen on these strange ways of spelling names. (I tend to spell every thing a bit strangely)

Briony is a lovely name.

But it can and does get shortened to Bry and younger children often struggle and use Barney.

mummyloveslucy · 12/02/2009 13:49

My daughter has a speech disorder and would probubly pronounce it Pie wa me.
She can't say her own mame properly either bless her. She says yuswee.

I have an Emilia, we call her Emmy rather than Milly though

thisisyesterday · 12/02/2009 13:53

like all of them

ds1 would have been Emilia had he been a girl. Matilda has stayed on my names list all 3 times now lol

not much help is it.

HensMum · 12/02/2009 13:53

Matilda is my favourite girls' name. Love it.
Emilia is OK but there are lots of Emily/Amelie/Amelia type names around at the moment.
I love Briony. I have a good friend called Bryony and it gets shortened to Bry or B.

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 12/02/2009 13:57

My youngest calls her Baa Baa. My niece used to call her Biney.

There are three 'offical' ways of spelling it btw.

Bryony
Briony
Bryonie

I think Bryony was the original spelling, but others have become more popular over time.

imaginewittynamehere · 12/02/2009 13:57

Matilda.
Emilia is nice, don't like Briony

Madmentalbint · 12/02/2009 14:34

Matilda is lovely and my fave.

Quite like Emilia.

Not keen on Briony.

ByTheSea · 12/02/2009 14:37

Briony/Bryony is currently my absolute favourite girl's name. I am not having any more, but if I did I'd definitely name her that.

seeker · 12/02/2009 15:18

But why Bryony?

weepootleflump · 12/02/2009 15:38

The only Briony I've ever known was a really horrible girl so that's probably put me off, though she was often called Bri too- not pretty.
