Edwin
Alek
Eldin
Idris
Kerim
Malik
Tarik
Edem
Elian

Bear in mind:

  • Surname is one syllable starting with G
  • Name needs to be pronouncable for English and Welsh relatives
  • Name needs to work in an eastern european country too
  • older brother is called Dominic

Only 3 weeks left to due date and this is the best shortlist we've had so far.

Thanks

I am not a huge fan of any of them I am afraid ... Alek is the best though but I am not sure anyone would spell it correctly!

audley · 09/02/2009 19:33

Edwin gets my vote, very cute for baby and Ed is cool for teenager. Also, edwin could be quite posh I think!

WelliesAndPyjamas · 09/02/2009 19:46

Thanks both. Actually Edwin is my favourite too but DH doesn't like it that much... And Alek is my 2nd favourite.
I know they're a bit unusual but we feel they have to be easy to pronounce in the country we live in (this comes from personal experience!).

What do you think of Eldin?

OP posts:
LaDiDaDi · 09/02/2009 23:25

Edwin-my favourite
Alek-ok, I think of the model Alek Wek??
Eldin-no
Idris-no
Kerim-I quite like this
Malik-no
Tarik-I like this, but then I've known a lovely Tareq
Edem-doesn't sound like a name at all
Elian-ok

What about just "Eli"?

They are all very short names, is there a reason for this?

Other ideas

Kit
Mark
Luca

I like Edwin a lot, and it goes well with Dominic. Not really keen on the others, sorry.

Zahrah · 09/02/2009 23:30

Tarik all day long - super name for a boy!

MmeLindt · 09/02/2009 23:32

I like Edwin and Alek, but prefer Alex spelling.

Not so keen on the rest, sorry.

RachieB · 09/02/2009 23:52

not a fan of any of them really ,but if i had to choose one i like Elian the best

peachface · 09/02/2009 23:54

Idris and Edwin..but I think Idris wins for me!

loulabell07 · 10/02/2009 09:47

I like the sound of Dominic and Edwin G...

MmeLindt · 10/02/2009 14:13

What about Sebastian? I think Dominic and Sebastian go really well together.

Don't know about the sound of the name in Eastern Europe/Wales though.

I could not sleep last night and was thinking about names for your baby, Wellies.

MrsMattie · 10/02/2009 14:16

Edwin - ghastly

Alek= prefer it with a 'c' at the end, but still not madly keen

Eldin / Idris sound made up. Maybe that's just my ignorance, though?

Kerim / Malik / Tarik - nice. I like Turkish / North African / Muslim names

Edem / Elian - have never heard these before. Elian is OK, but prefer Elias.

WelliesAndPyjamas · 10/02/2009 18:18

Thanks for all the thoughts. They're all real names - honest!

And thanks MmLindt for losing sleep over this - well beyond the call of duty, my dear I've considered Sebastian recently but hve gone off it now - no real reason, except it didn't 'feel' right!

LaDiDaDi - No reason for short names other than they happen to be the ones we like/find acceptable this time around.

This is so difficult.

WelliesAndPyjamas · 10/02/2009 18:19

loulabell07 - my sentiments exactly!

Edwin. (Have one - sounds like we might have the same surname too!)

DanJARMouse · 10/02/2009 18:28

Edwin - ok
Elian - ok

Others are a no for me.

MrsSeanBeanIsEmployable · 10/02/2009 18:31

Edwin is the best IMHO.

LynetteScavo · 10/02/2009 18:34

Edwin- not bad
Alek- Excellent - goes best with Dominic
Eldin -no
Idris - NO
Kerim - no
Malik - NO
Tarik - Heavens NO
Edem - no
Elian - well....

BlueChampagne · 11/02/2009 13:20

Idris gets my vote

pixiemoon · 12/02/2009 13:40

Edwin - alright. Makes me think of Edwin Collins 'never met a girl like you before.....'
Alek - prefer Alec/Alex
Eldin - hmmm ok
Idris - really like it
Kerim - not keen
Malik - not keen
Tarik - not keen (is there an arabic connection with these 3?)
Edem - not sure how to pronounce - whether the first E is long (eeee) or short (eh)?
Elian - love this. Sounds lovely in Welsh (looking it up it's Spanish?)

So

  1. Elian
  2. Idris
  3. Edwin
dustbuster · 12/02/2009 13:44
  1. Edwin
  2. Idris - this is a cool name!
GossipMonger · 12/02/2009 13:48

Edwin - ooh no

Not keen on any of them really.

Theo
Felix
Rufus
Archie

Madmentalbint · 12/02/2009 14:31

My fave out of the ones you've listed is Edwin

WelliesAndPyjamas · 14/02/2009 19:44

thanks for the new replies

still no closer to a decision here... think it will be a case of tucking this list in to my hospital bag and getting it out once baby appears!

My fave is still Edwin though

OP posts:
wastingmyeducation · 14/02/2009 19:58

I didn't like Edwin, but I'm saying it in a Welsh accent and it sounds much nicer!

I like Idris though.
I can't use I names with our surname.

Francis?
