Edwin
Alek
Eldin
Idris
Kerim
Malik
Tarik
Edem
Elian

Bear in mind:

  • Surname is one syllable starting with G
  • Name needs to be pronouncable for English and Welsh relatives
  • Name needs to work in an eastern european country too
  • older brother is called Dominic

Only 3 weeks left to due date and this is the best shortlist we've had so far.

Thanks

Idris is fantastically Welsh! Makes me think of Ivor the Engine I have a cousin Edwin and it's a fab name. The others seem much more "foreign" to an English eye, and less of a fit with Dominic, I like the sound of Elian, Tarik and Malik (do these names sometimes end in a q instead? - that's what I want to type IYKWIM) make me think of film stars, but I'm not sure why. I don't like Alek because it seems like only a bit of a name, I have a cousin Alastair who is an Alec.

Maybe you'll just need to wait for the baby to come and one of the names will fit just right.

WelliesAndPyjamas · 15/02/2009 04:40

Nooka - certainly the name Tarik can be written with a Q at the end, but in the country we live, where the alphabet is far mroe phonetic, it is normally written with a K. IT kind of works for me but prob because I'm used to it.

Does anyone think Elian sounds too feminine? (this coul dof course be my tired mind over-analysing these names at 4am...)

at WME pronouncing Edwin with a welsh accent - are you saying it out loud too?

In your situation I would go for the name that spells phonetically in all the 3 languages you need it to work in.

SamsMama · 15/02/2009 07:53

I think Alek or Alec/Alex sounds the best with Dominic, but that's just me. I think they're all pretty ok, but Edwin seems so much more old-fashioned than the others.

ScummyMummy · 15/02/2009 07:56

Kerim is nice.

misscat · 15/02/2009 15:06

My ds is called Eren, easy to spell & pronounce & he's the only one at school.
I thought it would be nice growing up too. His middle name is James, to avoid any confusion as to gender.

barnsleybelle · 15/02/2009 15:18

I like alek and edwin.

What about Ivan?

jellybeans · 15/02/2009 15:24

Idris reminds me of the ginger beer.

Wigglesworth · 15/02/2009 15:33

Not a big fan of any, agree with others Alex is way nicer than Alek (Alex a BIG fav of mine )

Wigglesworth · 15/02/2009 15:47

What about Reece, I think that's Welsh.

ten10 · 15/02/2009 15:51

I love Edwin,
we would have loved it for DS except that he already has two uncles "Ed's"
an Edmund and an Edward (on opposing sides of the family) and we thought another Ed would be confusing and a bit too much.
(I also would have loved Edgar but vetoed for same reasons)

Similar to some of the names on your list (but different) is
Marek
I went to school with one and he was a really sweet boy, so have always loved the name

heathermc · 15/02/2009 17:58

Edwin is really nice - Elian will be called Alien at school just so you know!

nooka · 15/02/2009 19:15

Sorry Wellies, I wasn't meaning to imply you had misspelt the names, just that I expected them to have "q"s. I studied the Middle East at university, so I suspect I may have read about a few Tariqs, or read books by Tariqs. Or maybe I'm thinking about Terrence Malick (not a q at all!).

WelliesAndPyjamas · 15/02/2009 20:47

no, no, not what I meant nooka - sorry

see your point about alien/elian, heathermc

barnsleybelle - got a cousin called Ivan so can't use that despite how easy and phonetic it would be

I like Edwin, Malik or Alek.

TheFallenMadonna · 18/02/2009 13:08

Alec is one of my favourite boys names. Not sure about the k though. Don't much like it with an x either though

Or Edwin.

BigusBumus · 18/02/2009 13:13

We considered Edwin too, a great name, although we ended up having a Miles.

Idris is the brand name of the Ginger-Beer i buy all the time!

Elian would def be called Alien like Heather suggested!

Not keen on the Eastern European sounding names, but Malik the best.

Boobz · 18/02/2009 13:17

Edwin ok if shortened to Ed.

Elian the nicest sounding from the more exotic names, and could be shorted to Eli which I like.

Not sure on the rest I'm afraid, but I do love Dominic...

nigeltuffnell · 18/02/2009 13:36

Idriss !!!!

LOVE that name, best funk drummer ever lived, Idriss Mohammed

Can't believe someone other than me likes that name.

Karamazov · 18/02/2009 13:39

Edwin. DD2 would have been an edwin if a boy.

ladyhelen2 · 18/02/2009 13:44

Edwin.
Alec (not with a K)
Like the suggestion of Eli instead of Elian.
Don't like the rest at all I'm afraid.

Do love Dominic. This is on my shortlist for my new one.

Lizzylou · 18/02/2009 13:45

Another vote for Edwin, love it.

Hailsk · 18/02/2009 14:51

Alek is the nicest imo, it's nice to have a different spelling from the norm, too

sleepyhead3 · 18/02/2009 17:22

Edwin and Alec are okay but don't really like the others.
