And pretended it was a name for future dd? Not going to personally because I know other people who mumsnet and don't want to out myself but I wonder if people would say; oooh not Mildred all Mildreds * are bitches. And then you'd know what people really think of your name.

  • Not really called Mildred.

My middle name is a really on trend - for the decade I was born, so I'd be spotted immediately.

ilovegreenbeans · 03/02/2009 14:33

I never met anyone with the same name as me growing up, but it's a very popular name for girls now, so I'll take it that people like it!

HeadFairy · 03/02/2009 14:36

Someone did ask about my name recently. It's a fairly unusual name, and she was asking what people thought of the shortened version which can be a bit rude.... I'm not bothered at all if anyone doesn't like my name, it's mine and not theirs.

BlameItOnTheBogey · 03/02/2009 14:37

But do you think you would rempy? Wouldn't people just say 'I like it but it's a bit 1970s' or some such?

Beans, is it odd after being unique growing up to hear your name so much now?

Ah headfairy that is the sensible approach but nonetheless, I'd love to know what preconceptions people have about me because of my name.

People have LOTS of preconceptions about my name as both my first name and my surname are foreign (French first name, Italian surname) I think people expect Gina Lollobrigida turn up, perhaps they're a bit disappointed when they see me, tough really, I can't do anything about that.

I did have one time when it worked in my favour. I did the tall ships race a few years ago, sailing from Plymouth to the Canaries. As there's such a big crew (70 odd) we were assigned jobs before we got to the boat, all they had to go by was our age, gender and name. Everyone else had jobs like hauling ropes and manning winches, but because the skipper took a shine to my name I was on helm, so whenever we went to tacking stations (when we turned the boat) everyone else had to pull a rope or something similarly sweaty and dull, and I got to steer the boat, a 150 foot square rigged schooner. Cooooooool!!!

Mine was not a popular name when I was born in the late 60's. It was even considered posh but it has gained in popularity over the years and has been in almost every soap opera. It is probably now considered naff.

My middle name is Helen if anyone wants to comment on that!

RachieB · 03/02/2009 16:37

I like my name and its used a fair bit still

sooooo glad i wasn't called what my dad liked !!

HeadFairy · 03/02/2009 19:11

Fimbo - Helen was the face that launched a 1000 ships. Lovely name

LaDiDaDi · 03/02/2009 21:30

My name has never been popular in the UK.

I've seen it suggested here a couple of times recently, once by me, and I think that a while ago there was once a thread asking for opinions on it but it didn't get many replies other than associations with one sleb.

wickedwestfieldwitch · 03/02/2009 21:31

Mine was on here recently.

It received a mixed reception.

It's either beautiful or goody goody I think, depending on who you ask.

MitchyInge · 03/02/2009 21:33

I hate hate my name, all my siblings have nice normal names and I got a stupid one

MitchyInge · 03/02/2009 21:35

according to this only 7 people in the UK have my exact first name, although the shorter proper version is much more popular

Drusilla · 03/02/2009 21:37

It says I am the only one, but I know that's wrong because there is another one of me on Facebook!

Twims · 03/02/2009 21:37

It's been mentioned that people with my name are big boned on another thread

Drusilla · 03/02/2009 21:39

Drusilla · 03/02/2009 21:39

Oops

SalBySea · 03/02/2009 21:41

my name rarely comes up, wish it did more as I find those threads so interesting

My DH's name comes up A LOT and we love reading the descriptions, they almost always apply to DH

I know lots of people my age with my name but no babies seem to be called that these days

LaDiDaDi · 03/02/2009 21:42

Wow, I'm unique too!

MitchyInge · 03/02/2009 21:42

there are lots of me in the states, according to facebook

and there is a porn actress who uses my actual name as her, ahem, stage name

MitchyInge · 03/02/2009 21:43

(I am unique with first name + surname in UK tho)

LaDiDaDi · 03/02/2009 21:43
