Anna

Am now seriously considering this as a first name for dd. DP's surname is Holmes. DP thinks it is possibly a little plain and does not go so well with the one syllable surname. He likes Amelie best. Thanks for any thoughts.

Very nice but Amelie is one of my favourite names.

Anna is classical and pretty.

magnummum · 13/01/2009 19:16

Love Anna.

NotBigJustBolshy · 13/01/2009 19:17

Excellent name - and no one ever shortens it to anything daft.

SauerKraut · 13/01/2009 19:21

I have one too- Anna Claire.

Kotek · 18/01/2009 11:47

I have managed to persuade DP to go with Anna. I hope dd does not grow up to think it is too boring!! Are the Anna's you know happy with their names?

Surprised at all the positive comments.

I've always thought Anna is a bit nothingy and meh, myself.

chancelloroftheexCHEQUERS · 18/01/2009 11:54

(Oops, sorry, bad timing, didn't see last post!)

It's a nice enough, inoffensive name.

electra · 18/01/2009 11:55

Anna is a fab name. The only reason I'm not considering it is that it is in the top 100, which is a shame. Having said that, I don't think it is very popular.

whingeomatic · 18/01/2009 11:57

DD1 is Anna - she's the only one in her primary school

Her nickname is Anna Panna!!

MrsMattie · 18/01/2009 14:25

I love the name Anna. Very nearly called my (8 wk old) DD this.

BikeRunSki · 18/01/2009 20:56

Love it, DS would have been Anna if he had been a DD. And we have a boring surname too. Don't like Amelie. Well don't dislike it, but it has exploded since that film. Anna more timeless.

LittleDoe · 18/01/2009 21:32

Anna is a gorgeous name. We would probably go for it except that it doesn't go that brilliantly with our surname which is a real shame.

NumberFour · 19/01/2009 13:41

Anna is truly a beautiful name. could not use it myself cos I have SIL of similar name.

MrsTittleMouse · 19/01/2009 13:44

Lovely name - it would have been on our list, but doesn't work with our DDs' surname.

mrsseanbean · 19/01/2009 13:45

This is a very, very, very nice name

hoppybird · 19/01/2009 16:20

I'm amused to see the name becoming so popular in the UK. When I was at school, back in the day, whenever you met an Anna, she was likely to be a second genration Pole. Many parents like to use names which translated well into English, and Anna was one of the most common Polish girls' names anyway. Of course, we were all called 'Ania' at home, which is the usual diminutive.

Are you a Pole, Kotek?

I've always liked my name. It goes well with many surnames, including Holmes. Occasionally, I've been called Ann, which I find to be entirely different and not 'me' at all.

RachieB · 20/01/2009 23:20

I agree with chancellor i'm afraid,bit of a dreay,boring nothing name IMO

An Anna in school with me was NN Anna Spanner! lol

RachieB · 20/01/2009 23:21
  • dreary!
Kotek · 22/01/2009 11:08

Anna Spanner! lol
I won't worry too much about the teasing, as a mother recently told me that her friend's little one who has a lovely name - Ella - has been called 'Ella-Smella' a lot so I guess it is a risk with all names!

Gorgeous. Dh has a cousin called Anna so we'd never use it, but it's beautiful.

Kotek · 23/01/2009 14:25

hi hoppybird, no, not polish but born not too far away! Grew up here though. I agree with your comment that Ann has quite a different feel to Anna.

Lovely - classic name - not boring at all. It's a name that easily crosses countries too.

Makes me think of one of my fave books - Anna Karenina

lunamoon2 · 23/01/2009 20:33

I think it is a timeless classic, not boring but yet simple and chic

louisean · 02/02/2009 17:18
