Anna

Am now seriously considering this as a first name for dd. DP's surname is Holmes. DP thinks it is possibly a little plain and does not go so well with the one syllable surname. He likes Amelie best. Thanks for any thoughts.

What good taste you have! I have an Anna and our final two names were down to that and Amelie. Most people seem to really love the name Anna.

Of course, I have since decided that I really should have called one of my DDs Elizabeth...

juneybean · 11/01/2009 12:13

It's a beautiful name :D

SoLongMarianne · 11/01/2009 12:16

What's not to love? It's simple yet pretty, a lucky palindrome, would suit a wide range of babies, girls and women.

keels26 · 11/01/2009 12:18

Its lovely, my DD is Rhianna and we call her Anna a lot of the time.

EyeballsintheSky · 11/01/2009 12:20

Love it, would use it but my niece is an Anna so wouldn't. And she's a lovely Anna too

Buda · 11/01/2009 12:21

Love it. As others have said it is classic and timeless. It is also feminine without being to 'pretty pretty'. And it is elegant.

onadietcokebreak · 11/01/2009 12:23

I think its is lovely.....but am biased as have a lovely friend called Anna

Kotek · 11/01/2009 14:41

Thank you, DP still needs a bit or persuading. Do you think if I used the first name Amelie and a middle name Anna I could call her Anna as a pet name and as the shortening for Amelie? People seem to use all sorts of nicknames for their children that don't necessarily have the same letters as the full name! Thanks

please please call her Anna on my behalf!!! I was desperate to call my dd2 that, DH vetoed on the grounds that it is "insipid"... Bollocks, it's the most perfect, elegant, sweet and classy name there is. Still, i had chosen dd1's name, so i had to yield.

If it was up to me I would have called her Anna Victoria.

Incidentally we called her Amelie, so that's ok too :-)

artichokes · 11/01/2009 15:26

What about Ariana as a compromise?

lolianja · 11/01/2009 19:48

Love it.

My sproglet in utero has already been named Anna so maybe an element of bias on my part, but still. A beautiful name.

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 11/01/2009 19:54

timeless

I too know an Anna and she is lovely

BonsoirAnna · 11/01/2009 19:57

Anna is a great name - so great that I cannot even bear to be parted with it for my MN nickname . I have lived with it for 42 years and thank my parents every day for their good taste and forethought...

pinkmook · 11/01/2009 19:57

I hate to be the only one saying it but all the anna's I know have been frumpy, types - therefore I dont like the name - but certain names will do that for all of us (remind us of those you have known with that name) I really cant understand why people think its beautiful..but each to their own.

Maybe not the opinion you wanted to hear but I think it's good to hear opinions. Dont be offended if its your choice of name just wanted to give you a different opinion...you might hate my choice of childrens names

Kotek · 11/01/2009 20:07

Thanks to all, it's good to get mixed opinions so also appreciate your comments pinkmook!

LOVE the name Anna and have done since I was around 15. It is the only name I have ever been certain of, I have wavered on all others over the years but I am sure if we ever have a daughter she will be named Anna Elizabeth. Classic, timeless, and IMO suits a baby, is lovely on a teenager and would "grow" with you into adulthood. I am not keen on Amelie, although I think it is a pretty enough name I think it is quite popular now, and will date in a few years. Also, a friend has an Amelie and it constantly gets mis-pronounced/misunderstood - Emily, Amalie, etc etc.

Kotek · 11/01/2009 21:01

DP concerned Anna Holmes sounds too much like the city Annaheim in california and so a bit odd...what do you think?

LiffeyMermaid · 11/01/2009 21:08

Put Annabel Amelie Holmes on her birth cert, that does flow a lot better even if you prefer just Anna. I agree with your husband that 'Anna Holmes' could be confusing if you half heard it. Like 'An Asome' What an Asome?! or, "Anne's at home".

Annabel Holmes on the bc for when she goes up to collect her degree etc and Anna is your everyday name. Perfik!

Amelie as a first name very blah because it's a bit like Emily, a bit like Amelia, it's going to date because there was a crop of them after the Audrey Tatou film. It's not an unattractive name, but...... well.

TooMuchMakkaPakka · 13/01/2009 00:36

i prefer anna to amelie (and agree it is more timeless) but think that amelie goes better with your surname.

perhaps annabel could be a good compromise?

DontEatYellowSnowItsWeebump · 13/01/2009 00:44

Amelie is lovely, but v popular at the mo, so likely to be a 'fashion' name, and date eventually. I have an Annie.

KristinaM · 13/01/2009 00:59

lovely classic name

cory · 13/01/2009 17:03

If ds had been a girl, he would have been Anna.

Hulababy · 13/01/2009 17:24

Lovely name

sweetkitty · 13/01/2009 17:27

Agree lovely name one of DD3's middle names so bit biased

We have a harsh sounding surname so went for 3 syllable first names for all the DDs although they can be shortened.

Fimbo · 13/01/2009 17:28

Combine your surname and dh's surname. Then she can be Anna xxx=Holmes
