its a very snobbish name

Fimbo · 09/01/2009 11:29

I know one and she truly hates her name

TsarChasm · 09/01/2009 11:29

The ostrich on Pipkins iirc. Mind you, who remembers that, it was years ago.

Nancy66 · 09/01/2009 11:32

I like it and think it's a very pretty name but it is a bit of a mouthful and there aren't too many abbreviations possibilities.

annasmami · 09/01/2009 11:40

Beautiful name that is easily pronouncable in many other languages.

I wouldn't worry about the Skoda car associations because in 5-10 years these won't be around anymore anyway.

Octavia is lovely. And it roll of the tongue nicely so no need to be shortened.

RnB · 09/01/2009 12:07

lovely. on my shortlist if I ever have a girl

FlirtyThirty · 09/01/2009 12:14

Hate it...and I know one....who also hates it!
Like a previous posted mentioned, the one I know shortens it to Occy too...

Sorry - just not my thing; sounds a bit pretentious to me.

EyeballsintheSky · 09/01/2009 12:16

Love it. On my list for potential DD2

Drum · 09/01/2009 12:29

Do the supermarket test. Can you imagine shouting, "Octavia, put that can/packet of crisps/man back!" or does the thought make you feel uncomfortable? Obviosuly, the reason Octavia is so unusual is because it's not a name that everyone loves, but if you love it and would feel comfortable using it then go for it. I know friends with names I considered a bit when their child was born, but I love the names now because I connect them with the child.

I love it, also love Silvia. I seem to have a penchant for girls names which are car names.

Dottoressa · 09/01/2009 12:43

Snobbish?! Only in the eyes of inverted snobs, surely.

The supermarket test is fun. My DD has a name similar to Octavia (as in: similar idiom, similar lack of popularity), and I greatly enjoy using it in supermarkets! That's when I most enjoy her lovely name...

RachePache · 09/01/2009 12:45

Did anyone see the Telegraph name announcement for "Decima" sister to [nine other very meedja-dar-ling names]? Brilliant.

I like it but think it should only be given to an eighth child as I'm a purist like that. Tavy is a sweet nickname though.

othersideofchannel · 09/01/2009 13:20

Why on earth would anyone feel uncomfortable calling their child's name (the name they love and therefore chose) in a supermarket (or anywhere else)????

Northernlurker · 09/01/2009 16:19

I think I saw that Decima announcement too - I counted the other names up just to be sure!

BabyBaby123 · 09/01/2009 16:37

terrible - sounds like you are trying to prove you are posh

Hulababy · 09/01/2009 16:50

I prefer Olivia.

Octavia reminds me of the Skoda car (it is Skoda isn't it?)

Dottoressa · 09/01/2009 19:40

The problem with Olivia is that it's so, so common (as in 'every other child is called Olivia', not as in 'it's a chavvy name').

The idea that the OP would choose a child's name because she is trying to prove she is posh is very bizarre.

Decima is quite some name. Good for them!

kayzr · 09/01/2009 19:41

A lovely and very pretty name.

thisisyesterday · 09/01/2009 19:45

i really love Octavia

LadyThompson · 09/01/2009 20:52

Thank you Kayz

Snobbish? Pretentious? A name can't inherently have these qualities, they are just what an individual may or may not impart to it.

As for waiting for the eighth child...my Octavia is my first and she is called that (partly) for its musical connotations. Oh, and also because we loved it of course. I couldn't give a toss about the car either.
