Still struggling with girls names for baby due in weeks. Any thoughts on these?
I know Dora is a little spoilt by 'the explorer' but I really like it as a name!

Thanks a lot- mixed views but v helpful. My other possibilities are Celeste (or maybe Celestine), Cecily, Elodie, Sylvie.
Perhaps I should stick with theses and plug some really dodgy names with DH!

Cecily is lovely and Celeste and Sylvie are pretty. Of the original two I really don't like Dora and think Pearl is quite sweet, although I like Isadora better. I don't like Elodie. So Cecily gets my vote!

piscesmoon · 30/12/2008 19:26

I think Cecily and Sylvie are quite pretty. I can't stand Dora or Pearl.

NorthernLurker · 30/12/2008 19:28

Dorcas?

Dorothea?

Ada?

audley · 30/12/2008 19:43

Love Celestine

loobylu3 · 30/12/2008 20:27

Celestine is really pretty and I am v tempted. It's just a little different in style from the names of my other children which are more simple iyswim.

What about Doris instead?

or Diego

hazeyjane · 30/12/2008 20:39

I really like Dora (and I don't think it has been spoilt by 'the explorer' a)because it is a classic name which will outlast the programme and b)I think Dora the explorer is fantastic( she is feisty and clever and adventurous and has a monkey as a best friend - how cool is that!

Dorelia is a pretty name that's a bit like Dora with a bit of Pearl mixed in.

We love Dora and Diego in this house, enjoy your girl, Dora is a lovely name

hester · 30/12/2008 22:10

Dora was my first choice for dd.

everybody I know told me that was a bad idea .

So I think it probably is.... shame, though.

nula · 30/12/2008 22:33

I know a little girl called Pearl. Everyone I know thinks it is a really cool name.

mamalovesmincepiesANDmojitos · 30/12/2008 22:53

looove pearl.

i think i would be put off dora by all the inevitable explorer comments.

loobylu3 · 31/12/2008 10:27

It is interesting how mixed the OPs are. Most seem to like one name and hate the other!

Dora is a lovely name but spoiled by the explorer. Go for Pearl!

tummytickler · 15/01/2009 10:51

Hi
my dd is nearly 4 and called Pearl so i clearly love it!
How about Dorothy, our ds was going to be Dorothy shortened to Dottie (but he was a boy!). You could use nn of Dora, but she could chande it when she is older if she wanted to. Personally I would be reluctant to give an obviously nicknamey name as a given name - although it is lovely!

kateus · 21/01/2009 15:48

My baby is called Dora (I wasn't aware of the cartoon character so I've had to do a lot of patient nodding and smiling at people saying 'ooh, like Dora the Explorer?') it's a lovely name and I couldn't get it out of my head all through my pregnancy.
I also really like Sylvie from your list, it was a runner-up for my girl as well, but Dora won the day!

Nantucket · 21/01/2009 15:52

I love Isadora, with Dora as a nickname.

Mammina · 21/01/2009 17:02

Pearl wins hands down for me

loobylu3 · 21/01/2009 22:14

Just noticed this thread has been slightly re-activated!
Still like both the names. May perhaps use Pearl as a middle name.
Will probably see what suits her when she is born!!

Theodora or Dorothea and then shorten to Dora if the explorer connection bothers you. If not, then just Dora is nice too.
Pearl is ok for a middle name, I guess, but not as a first name imo.

kateus · 22/01/2009 22:19

Let us know what you go for won't you? xxx

BumblBeee · 22/01/2009 23:14

I like Pearl

Isadora ok

Dora just looks and sounds dowdy to me.

Know about 12 Ruby babies

twosofar · 24/01/2009 09:29

I love Dorothea and Theodora which can obviously both be shortened to Dora. Also love Pearl, but would be bit worried about the 'pearl necklace' connotations (ie the porn film type, not the actual gems!) You are asking for trouble when she's a teenger!
