I love Amelie (and Milly) but Amelia is too english home counties for us

BTW, i have nothing against the english home counties however just as gaelic names only really work in scotland or ireland there are some names that just seem out of place up here.

P.s. i noticed the Emily posts above - am i the only person who pronouonces Amelie and Am-i-lee? Nothing like Emily which i'd pronounce Em-i-lay.

babylovessanta · 23/12/2008 17:10

Sound very alike though.

fluffles · 23/12/2008 17:18

I guess it depends on accent then. They sound quite different when i say them.

V. important i think when choosing names to think about the prevailing local accent as well as family accents. Some names sound lovely in some accents and horrible in others.

Very pretty.

BucketsofReindeerPoo · 23/12/2008 17:57

That's true. Some Scottish accents would pronounce Amelia more like Amillia so the nn Millie would be more natural. My sis is a grown up Amelia but we've only ever called her Meely or Meels for short (down South that is).

Personally I prefer Amelia, unless you're French. Amelia sounds more classy and suitable for older girl/adult.

Don't like Milly - too many of them around, but tbh it would probably end up being abbreviated anyway!

MrsMattie · 23/12/2008 18:23

Amelie nice, Milly horrid

LiffeyanFiaRua · 23/12/2008 18:42

I like it, but I wouldn't say it was perfect becaues of the Audrey tatou film there are a lot of 6 and 7 yr old Amelies out there.

It's also very like Amelia and Emily, so it doesn't stand out, it blends in. This is not BAD however.

IF you love Millie (and it is very pretty) what do you think of Camille or Mildred or Millicent? Just a few other names that could have the same nn.

BucketsofReindeerPoo · 23/12/2008 20:20

Ooh I love Camille!
