Lawrence or Laurence?

I'm not sure which is nicer. (Not sure if I'll go with either, or even if I'm having a boy, but DH likes this one and there's precious few boys names he likes...)

And if you want to shorten Lawrence, would it be Lawrie? I have only ever seen Laurie.

Laurence. The w in Lawrie just looks a bit wrong.

Laurence is a girls name to my ears. I know a lovely one in her 30s. It is indeed the male version of Laurent.

Lawrence is a better option if you don't want your ds to be mistaken for a woman, especially outside the UK.

StrictlyOogieBoogiePumpkin · 21/10/2010 19:47

100% Lawrence, looks much more masculine.

1percentawake · 21/10/2010 20:16

Am Hmm Surely Laurence is a boys name in the UK - have only ever come across a female Laurence who is French. We can't start turning all our male names into female ones...!!!

Laurence with Laurie nn is lovely - I know quite a few little boys with this name Smile

Another vote in favour of Lawrence (for a boy), as I too regard Laurence as a female name, pronounced with the emphasis on the second syllable. I like Laurence for a girl though Smile.

I much prefer Lawrence (am biased though as it was my grandad's name). It looks more masculine to me. He was always called Lal for short but there's obviously also Larry or Laurie/Lawrie. I would have it for a future ds but it doesn't go with my married name at all, sadly.

Mamaoffour · 24/07/2018 07:21

Lawrence is male. Laurence is female.

sonnyboo · 24/07/2018 07:40

Yes, Laurence is definitely a female name. It's the feminine version of the male name Laurent.

Lawrence is a male name.

sonnyboo · 24/07/2018 08:09

Like Florence is the feminine version of Florent.

MikeUniformMike · 24/07/2018 13:14

Laurence. Not keen but I know a nice adult Laurence and it suits him. I also know one who gets called Larry. Little Women name.

SumAndSubstance · 24/07/2018 18:57

ZOMBIE (second revival), but it won’t stop me wading in. In the UK, Laurence is a boy’s name. How can people not know this?!

MikeUniformMike · 24/07/2018 19:25

Laurie in Little Women was a boy. The book was published in 1868.
There are many famous Laurences - Olivier, Fishburne, Fox, Llewellyn-Bowen, to name but a few.
St Lawrence/St Laurence was a man.
All of them with a girl's name apparently.

Butterfly1975 · 24/07/2018 20:28

My DS is Laurence (Laurie). Never once been mistaken for a girl Grin

MikeUniformMike · 24/07/2018 21:28

That's because in the UK Laurence is a boy's name.
Then again this is MN where Rowan (as in Atkinson), Rory (as in McGrath) etc are girls' names.

Icklepup · 26/07/2018 07:02

Laurence

sonnyboo · 26/07/2018 07:55

Lawrence as you might end up living or studying in a French speaking country where Laurence is a girls name.

dementedma · 26/07/2018 20:56

Laurence is NOT a girls name here in the UK. Lauren is the female version.
In France it is a girls name, the male version being Laurent.

laurence is a much nicer spelling that Lawrence which just looks wrong to me.

buttercup54321 · 26/07/2018 21:01

I prefer Laurence.
