Lawrence or Laurence?

I'm not sure which is nicer. (Not sure if I'll go with either, or even if I'm having a boy, but DH likes this one and there's precious few boys names he likes...)

And if you want to shorten Lawrence, would it be Lawrie? I have only ever seen Laurie.

I think Lawrence is more of a surname, and Laurence as a fore name? I like Laurence better.

MarkStretch · 29/09/2008 16:06

I'm using it as a middle name (after my Dad) and his name is Laurence.

I think Lawrence is more of a surname too.

zippitippitoes · 29/09/2008 16:06

agree with the others. My nephew is Laurence

you wouldn't call a girl Lawren would you?

Toodaised · 29/09/2008 16:15

laurence

pooka · 29/09/2008 16:17

Lawrence looks better to me.

DaDaDa · 29/09/2008 16:19

Lawrie/Lawrence was fairly often used in the North East of England and Scotland. I think of it as a more masculine version.

castille · 29/09/2008 16:31

I'm sure you won't care, but Laurence is a girl's name here (France). Boy's version is Laurent.

So personally, of the two spellings I prefer Lawrence, as it looks more manly

The only child I know with this name is Laurence (never abbreviated), but I do know an adult Lawrie/Lawrence.

JoolsToo · 29/09/2008 19:13

Laurence - I love this name but I'm the only one I know who does!

We have a grown friend called Laurence but he's known as Lol

Aero · 29/09/2008 19:15

I prefer Laurence and also assosiate Lawrence as a surname.

OrmIrian · 29/09/2008 19:16

My Dad is a Lawrence, he was NN Larry.

pickie · 29/09/2008 19:34

laurence

cory80 · 21/10/2010 09:45

Lawrence is a more common spelling after the 19th C and more often a last name.

Komondor · 21/10/2010 09:55

LOVE LOVE LOVE this name, but DH will not agree to it. He thought of Laurence Llewellyn Bowen rather than Lawrence Dallaglio or Lawrence of Arabia.

Laurie Lee (Cider with Rosie author) is Laurence.

I used to have a relative called Laurence, died several years ago, and he was lovely and I always loved his name. He used the shortened name Laurie.

I prefer Laurence, shortened to Laurie.

HighlandlassinLondonshire · 21/10/2010 11:10

This is on our list if DC is a DS...! I like the Lawrence spelling best.

I know a Laurence called Larry.

rachel234 · 21/10/2010 11:45

Laurence is a girls name to my ears, the male version of Laurent.

Lawrence is more masculine, but I'm not keen on Lawrie.

Expecting06112010 · 21/10/2010 12:07

Laurence! its lovely by the way, I know a laurence and he is a lovely lad! some people called him loz which kind of spoils the name, or they called him by his surname which happens alot dosent it!

Sunlightdances · 21/10/2010 12:34

Why not just Lawrence shortened to Laurie? Hmm
