we decided against Florence, as we have a Fred and the Tesco Clothing thing just put us off. I love Flora, but DH says she will get crucified at school because of Flora margarine.
I think he's wrong ( he usually is)

i do like the name, but i'd side with your dh, you are leasving her a bit open to ridicule, but it will depend on her nature..........

PootyApplewater · 18/08/2008 10:21

I think it is a lovely name.
(And better than Olivio or Trex! )

gladders · 18/08/2008 10:21

love both florence and flora.

personally would never use flora though - think your dh is right - sorry

BitOfFun · 18/08/2008 10:22

It was codeword for a slapper at my school I'm afraid. A shame, as the name is very pretty, but the "spreads easily" tagline of the adverts ruined it. Maybe kids today don't say that though, I'm not sure?

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 18/08/2008 10:24

Agree with BitOfFun, it was the same at our school.

AbbeyA · 18/08/2008 10:25

I saw the title and thought margarine-until I realised it was a name topic! A good reason to avoid it. How about Fleur? I much prefer Florence.

mabel1973 · 18/08/2008 10:32

i thought maybe flora margarine wasn't so common these days....however you have pretty much put me off!
at this rate we will never decide on a name!

I quite like fleur....but DH doesn't like that either. He likes Lila and lola

poor you, what about Constance? coudl be shortened to Connie.

savoycabbage · 18/08/2008 10:39

I always think

"Flora, the margarine for men."

which was the slogan when I was a child.

LadyThompson · 18/08/2008 11:12

It's a Scottish name to me. Nice if you are Scottish.

Sad to say that I can only think of margarine or the marathon. Don't think she wouldbe crucified over it though.

findtheriver · 18/08/2008 11:23

The 'spreads easily' thing was rife when I was at school, and yes, the biggest slapper in my year group was known as 'Flora'. No doubt there are different nicknames these days, but I'm afraid it would put me off! Also, she would probably be called Flo for short (every florence I know is) which isnt great either!

waspish · 18/08/2008 12:29

sorry not keen
margarine

FloraBee · 18/08/2008 13:49

I have Flora, so am obviously biased, but I love it. Have only ever had one comment about the margarine - and I think he knew he'd done wrong as soon as he opened his mouth! Have not had any comments at school so far.
It did worry me at first, but I think if you like it, you should use it. I like to think of the 'Goddess of Flowers'.

Ceolas · 18/08/2008 13:55

I love it and considered it for DD3. Was seriously outvoted on the margaring front. Shame really that people don't use such a pretty name.

(I love the name we eventually chose though )

mabel1973 · 18/08/2008 14:17

Ceolas - am intrigued...what did you go for in the end..i am really struggling here!
I appear to have been out voted and thoroughly put off Flora!

JuneBugJen · 18/08/2008 14:20

Sorry, the 'spreads easily' thing still is about, my friend has a youngish Flora and has this said about her.

That aside I really like it. Its pretty.

Binkyboo · 18/08/2008 14:25

Aww such a shame isn't it. I loved Flora too but other people disuaded me because of the margarine.

elmoandella · 18/08/2008 14:36

it's horrible. much rather have real butter.

or perhaps olive??

beanieb · 18/08/2008 14:36

I love it! wasn't John Peel's daughter called Florence- shortened to Florrie? I like that too.

mabel1973 · 18/08/2008 14:37

can anyone give me some suggestions???
I like old fashioned names that don't sound like old ladies IYSWIM? I.e. mildred would be out but i like Daphne (our cat is called that though, so not an option)
