Disagree with CuckooClockWorkOrange

Both Mine and DP's names are listed here

Is Peter on here yet? I think that's pretty ageless too

Nappyzoneneedssleep · 09/08/2008 18:26

Yeah I know an 92 year old Jessica, a 30 year old Jessica and a 5 year old Jessica....

WendyWeber · 09/08/2008 21:56

This Jessica would be 100 this year

Her mother was Jemima & her mother's sister was Isabella...

SilentTerror · 09/08/2008 22:19

I have a Jemima,I think that is quite timeless actually.
Jemima Khan is in her 30's,we had a great great aunt Jemima, and there are a few little Jemima's around.

I think there are very few timeless girls names - the fashion in girls names changes so rapidly. Most of the names listed here are popular now and also 100 years ago but have disapeared into the wilderness for many years in between. There tends to be a strong correlation between current names and names 100 years ago but names from 50 years ago are considered "middle aged" (eg. Patricia, Margaret, Linda, Susan, Janet). I really doubt Jessica, for example, was in the top 100 for most of the last century (at least I don't know very many middle aged ones).

The only popular girls name I think you could make an argument for is Elizabeth which has remained in the top 100 for many years though 80 years ago they might have been a Lizzie, 50 years ago a Betty, 30 years ago a Beth and recently a Libby. We seem to be heading back to Eliza which was popular a long time ago. A bit cheaty because Elizabeth is about 20 names in one!

I did read a paper once where the author wanted to find the most timeless girls name and the winner was rather un-obviously Antonia which has always remained outside the top 100 but in about the same place.

Boys names do stick around longer. James is the only name which has been in the top 10 for over a century, I believe, and plenty of others have been in the top 100 for 100 years too.
