Is Jules ok as an official name, or would you lengthen it?

Although I am SURE this baby will be a girl (I thought the same with DS too!) I guess I need some boys names just in case. DP and I both really like Jules/Jools but not keen on Julian/Julius. Do you think it is ok as a stand alone name? Our other option is Jasper...Boys names are sooo difficult!

I think it's very nicknamey, tbh. I don't like Julian or Julius much either so i see your problem. Jasper sounds a bit cheesy to me...

Ah I was going to say Julianna or Juliet, but it is a boy

Jules is fine, very postmodern and cool

brimfull · 30/07/2008 19:55

thought it was a girl's name

IMO it's a nickname.

If you don't like Julian/Julius, Jasper is very nice. Although I am partial to Julian... once had a bit of a thing for a rather fit Julian .

hw2004 · 30/07/2008 20:01

Not sure about it as a stand alone name - I think a lot of people would think it was a girls name.

How about Jolyon?

ateles · 30/07/2008 20:01

My boss is called Julian...and he is definately not fit. No, Julian is not an option!

Jude?

HonoriaGlossop · 30/07/2008 20:03

Jasper is lovely, much nicer than Jules

HonoriaGlossop · 30/07/2008 20:03

love Jude, as well

frazzledoldbag34 · 30/07/2008 20:04

My gut reaction is NO!
Jules makes me think of Judge Jules (on the radio).
or Jules Oliver (wife of Jamie)
so no.
But Julian is ok then you could shorten it......

Jasper is better. Less 'cool'. Sorry .
But it sounds like a cat's name to me.

But if you really like it, don't let anyone stop you!
Least of all me.

Lots of other nice J names though surely.......although I did hear of Jaxon recently!!!!!!! Not that I would recommend that one......

Cammelia · 30/07/2008 20:05

Jules is a French boy's name, has to be pronounced without the "s"

frazzledoldbag34 · 30/07/2008 20:06

What about Jay?

uberalice · 30/07/2008 20:07

What Cammelia said.

ateles · 30/07/2008 20:07

A J name is not essential . I do like Jude though.

Or Gilles? I have a lovely friend (Scottish mother, french father). Pronounced 'Jille' not gi-llies.

LynetteScavo · 30/07/2008 20:08

Jasper

ateles · 30/07/2008 20:09

I actually know a little French boy called Jules, which is what got me thinking about the name in the first place. I quite like the spelling Jools, which clears up any pronunciation issues.

He is going to need something a bit more formal for his CV when he applies to be Chair of the Board. Give him that option and then use Jules for absolutely everything else.

I have never, in my life, been called by my full name and it's fine.

vanloadtovenice · 30/07/2008 20:37

I had a boyfriend called Jules, he was a bit too cool for school. What about Jonty? Or Jolyon? Good luck!

Flightputsonahat · 30/07/2008 20:38

If it's good enough for Jules Verne it's good enough for a chairman of the board or whatever...just say it's French! Easy

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 30/07/2008 20:41

I know and like a very cool Jules, but I agree I would always give the full name, then ues the nick name, it gives the chld more options later.

I like Jasper too.

I much prefer Jude or Jasper tbh.
