Tara - chav or not?

Wouldn;t be chav round here, just unusual and not common at all. An olde name - only ones I know are now in their mid/late 20s.

But then DD is a Mollie, and round here that is also not in that category. Maybe it depend where you live in the country....

I like this name too and it goes well with our surname (not an easy feat), but I too was worried about the chav connotations. I've heard it grouped in with Sharon & Tracey type names. I think it could go either way TBH. But if you love it, use it! Anyway, for us it is no longer on the list. I still like it, but it also sounds very Irish and we have no Irish connections.

I've never heard it as a dog's name.

On the Tara sounding theme... I have a friend called Tora - short for Victoria. She is also called Tori. Just a thought...

One of my loveliest friends is a Tara and about as far removed from a chav as is possible.

What chav connotations? Until this thread, I'd never read or heard a negative comment about Tara. It's too unusual. Even in Ireland it's one of those names like Clodagh and Maeve, more popular with ladies who play bridge. It's not a very common name even in Ireland.

Sharon and Tracy type names would be names that were extremely popular and 'new' late 60s and early 70s. I would say perhaps Dawn might be in that category. I have a lovely friend with one of those names.

I don't care about the Dog thing! I like Polly and Bruno and Sadie. IMO Tara doesn't work on a dog. It's like Anna. Too modest for a dog. Not cutesy enough.

OP, good choice imo, I only know one Tara of any age in real life.

Tara is certainly not chav. In Sanskrit it means 'star; savior', in Irish, 'hill'. The name was much more popular in the 70s though: baby name Tara

not exactly chav, but ive heard the name Tiara used by young chavvies, quite similar. But then theres a posh celeb called Tara isnt there? As long as you like it and pronounceit nicely doesnt matter does it. Peope will always differ in their opinions. really its better not to ask.

Tara is a gorgeous name. Understated and classy. Have only met one little girl called Tara but far too many Mia's, Sophie's, Emily's, Katie's.......

Tiara's a completely different name and bears no relation to Tara unless you can't discern the extra letter.

Great name. Very uncommon without being complicated. It's spelt Teamhair (not pronounced like that, though!) in Irish and was the seat of the High Kings in Co Meath.

Sounds horrid when said with an American accent, but that's the only disadvantage! NOT chavvy.
