Be as blunt as y'all like.

Um, the first thing I thought was IKEA furniture which always seems to be called stuff like Tostig.

Brutal but true

minouminou · 02/07/2008 11:29

Ha! S'alright, it'll fit in with my surname!
Any more?
On the two-week wait at the mo, and poor DP's already getting nervous....says he should choose this time round.

Um, what about when he gets nicknamed Tosser at school? Usually I am all for frou frou names, esp for boys, but Tostig is a ponce too far IMO.

LadyThompson · 02/07/2008 11:31

I think it's quite cute. Not really a name I would choose but quite cute nonetheless

minouminou · 02/07/2008 11:36

We've been through the tosser thing, and i know it's inevitable, which is why i'm trying to resist.

Ikea furniture ?

teased as "tosser" at school ?

You can't even be considering inflicting your poncey tendancies on this child unless you have limitless funds to send him to a private school all his life.

themildmannneredjanitor · 02/07/2008 11:41

tostig would be child abuse.
do NOT do it.

TsarChasm · 02/07/2008 11:43

Please..step away from it.

TheFallenMadonna · 02/07/2008 11:43

I think I agree with your DP. He should choose this time round

ninedragons · 02/07/2008 11:45

Yeah, I thought Ikea too. Maybe a fondue set or a fleece blanket with a bold pattern of circles.

Save it for a cat, I'm afraid.

minouminou · 02/07/2008 11:47

I know, I know, I can't do it, but it doesn't stop me loving it.
Stigan or Stigand is another variation, which removes the "tosser" element

OP posts:
hattyyellow · 02/07/2008 11:47

Not terribly keen on Tostig. Stigan brings Stig of the Dump to mind..sorry!

minouminou · 02/07/2008 11:48

Fleece blanket! Surely not.....a good sturdy set of birch shelves, more like.

OP posts:
minouminou · 02/07/2008 11:49

Yeah, thought about the stig thing...will anyone remember that in years to come?
The modern stig-figure ('scuse pun) is the driver from top gear.

No, you can't. I do see why you like it. But I like Pocket and Silky and I've just had to resign myself that they are names for imaginary children and not to be inflicted on real ones.

Get a cat/dog/hamster and call it Tostig.

minouminou · 02/07/2008 11:51

Thanks, MrsB.
It's one of those if the world was an ideal place names, innit?
Sigh. Tostig the springer it is, then.

minouminou · 02/07/2008 11:53

how about as a middle name?
(ducks and runs under table).
second middle name? that won't show up on the electoral roll?

OP posts:
hattyyellow · 02/07/2008 12:06

Middle names no worries. They can keep it quiet or publicise it as much as they choose. I have no idea what the middle names are of most people I know!

I know several people who chose to be known by their more unusual middle name - so the kid will always have the choice to call themselves it if they choose.

My parents gave us all fairly ordinary first names and then went crazy with middle names. My brothers have an Inigo and Blaize tucked away as middle names, which my mum wouldn't let my dad choose as first names.

minouminou · 02/07/2008 12:09

we've got an inigo round here somewhere

OP posts:
LuLuBai · 02/07/2008 12:27

nowt wrong with Inigo at all. Blaize - of glory?

But I think Tostig is OK too (although it wouldn't feature on my personal list)

Have some other names up your sleeve and see how you feel once you have given birth.

snowleopard · 02/07/2008 12:29

I like Tostig. It sounds as if it's Swedish/Danish/whatever for "Toasty" - which is a good thing! Stigan even better though - really manly. being called Stig for short would be cool.

hattyyellow · 02/07/2008 12:32

St Blaize - the patron saint of people afflicted with throat complaints.

During a ceremony at St Ethelredas Church in London, the sufferers? throats are blessed when touched by two candles bound together.

. Think my brother was better off with it as a middle than a first name!

minouminou · 02/07/2008 12:38

sorry, hatty, that's just made me laugh
throat complaints...saint
