Hi everyone, we are expecting our second daughter in January and i am pretty set on the name Maeva for her.
I appreciate the name is fairly unique so I just wanted to get some opinions on the name before we make the final decision.
For context, our eldest daughter’s name is Camille nn Cami. We are not french, our love for the names is a happy accident.

so it’s Ava with an M at the beginning? Too twee

Maeve is far superior a name. For one, it doesn’t end with an a

call her Maveve.

bananaobama · 29/09/2026 11:28

Unique means one of a kind. it doesn’t mean rare

something cant be fairly unique

If you're going for the French spelling it should be Maëva. But I wouldn't saddle a child living in the UK with a tréma / diaeresis / umlaut.

How are you pronouncing it? Mah-ey-vah? May-va?

Purplecatshopaholic · 29/09/2026 11:39

You are going to get people thinking they misheard Ava. Plus Maeve is just nicer.

Yes there is. I like it OP and personally prefer it over Mavie.

Same and know the name from that too.

boundarysponge · 29/09/2026 11:42

I know a Maeva. She’s Spanish and in her late 30s so not a new name.

croisette · 29/09/2026 11:42

Wasn’t there a Made In Chelsea influencer type person ?
agree I prefer Maeve, my friend’s daughter is Maebh (same pronounciation obvs), haven’t come across a French Maeva though. Maeve or Ava are nicer alone imo.

Not heard of it before. So is it related to the Irish name Maeve or does it have a different origin?

It's fine.

It’s from the language of the indigenous people of New Caledonia (which is a French overseas collectivity) - completely unrelated to the Irish Maeve and not pronounced like it either.

wishingonastar101 · 29/09/2026 11:48

Yeah it's fine.

Nevernotgoingto · 29/09/2026 11:48

I don’t like it sorry. Never heard of Maeva. I know Maeve is always popular on here but it sounds too old-fashioned to me.

tantrai · 29/09/2026 11:48

I know an almost one year old called Maeva, and they’re Sikh/Indian and I love the name! It means sweet in their language. It’s a very unique name but also not made out of the blue and has meaning, and sounds amazing. I prefer Maeva over Maeve ☺️

ginasevern · 29/09/2026 11:54

It's going to become one of those "faddy" names and there will be thousands of them. Maeve has far more class and has ancient roots. It's also extremely pretty.

Maeva is the name of a French holiday apartment company.

That’s the first thing that came into my head as well.
