Need help with a girl name!

Hi all,

My husband and I have been struggling with a name for our baby girl. We like classic names especially those that have a meaning behind them. We’ve shortlisted the folllowing - Emma, Grace, Charlotte, Esther and have likely decided to go with Esther. But we are concerned it may sound a little old!

What do you guys think of Esther! What comes to mind when you hear the name?

Esther is a pretty name and i don't think its too old but my immediate thought is the killer girl from Orphan

I know an Esther.
She's 20 and very cool in her dress sense (think pink hair, band t-shirt etc) and has the excitement and energy of a puppy.
Definitely not "old".

I sounds a bit dry and dusty to me for some reason. I can't imagine an Esther being much fun. I picture quite a severe and imperious woman with a pince-nez and a tight bun.

I like Emma best from your list.

The Esther I knew was a pretty wee soul- her sister was called Naiomi

I think they're all great names, my faves are Grace and Esther.

Naiomi that spelling is awful.

I love it. Was in my top 3 for DD who was born this summer.

Met one last year who was super cool and successful. Also came across it in a book, the seven skins of Esther Wilding. It kept cropping up during my pregnancy. Think it's actually got a modern, edgy feel to it despite being a very old/traditional name.

I also like Hester, but think you'd permanently be correcting people who think you've said Esther.

I love the name Esther. It is an old name, yes. Though, I think it’s due a revival!

I expect the OP meant "old fashioned".

I love Esther as a name. It's elegant, classic and biblical (I love a good bible name) and less commonly used than the others on your list.

Estie or Essie are cute nns.

Esther is a great name. My DD had 4 Emma’s in her class at school. It’s very common. Charlotte is very over used too. Grace - less so. I think names used a long time ago are always classics except maybe avoid Gertrude and possibly Ethel. You could try Emmeline. Much better than Emma.

Not mad on Esther to be honest. Can imagine Grace being Gracie which is cute. How about Sienna?

I've taught a few Esther's and currently have 2 in my classes (yr7) so it's not old fashioned - it's a lovely, timeless name.

All the names are lovely. Similar - Anna, Jenny, Eliza

Your name list is similar to ours. Husband loves Charlotte, I love Emma, we both love Alice. Grace is one of our middle name options too :)

I really like Esther. It’s a known name without being common.

Love the name Esther. Unlike a lot of names I think it can be the name of a high powered lawyer or a super quirky, creative type. Everyone knows how to read and pronounce it but it isn’t super common.

All ok, except Emma, which I love.
