My husband and I can’t agree

My husband and I have very different taste in names and we can’t seem to come to an agreement!

He likes princessy, romantic, long, fairytale names:

  • Seraphina
  • Evangeline
  • Penelope

He also insists on calling her by her full name and doesn’t really like nicknames.

I like cute, mostly 1-2 syllable names:

  • Elle
  • Mia
  • Nina
  • Lily
  • Rose
  • Sophie

A name that we might be getting close to agreeing on is Katherine, because although it is long it has 3 syllables and kinda sounds short. Any other names come to mind that you think sort of match my vibe but can also seem princess-y? Sorry if this is a hard ask!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Melanie, Elodie, Louisa, Madeleine.

faerylune · 23/08/2026 11:13

I tried to list bunch of 3 syllables fancy names, do you like any of them? Some of them has 2 or 4 syllable but I tried to be reasonable.

Imogen
Jemima
Sabrina
Felicity
Matilda
Helena
Rebecca
Polina
Delphine
Charlotte
Eliana
Callista
Georgina
Juliet
Beatrice
Ottilie
Cecily
Nerissa
Odette
Winifred
Valeria/Valerie
Louise
Stephanie
Cordelia

I must admit I like his list more, but I would use name like Seraphina and occasionally call her a nickname. Why is he against the nicknames?

Ilovemyfam · 23/08/2026 11:16

Just warn Dad about the shortened name. When I refer to my (now 36 yr old daughter ) I use 4 syllables. When people ask her name she gives a 2 syllable name (like Catherine/Kate). I had no choice once she had school friends.

Evangeline is lovely!

"Fairest of all the maids was Evangeline,”

Daffodilsinthespring · 23/08/2026 12:41

Katherine is lovely, as are all your husband’s choices.

Well, in case you hadn’t noticed, we have member of the royal family named Catherine so it must be princessy!

She wasn’t born into royalty.

UnbeatenMum · 23/08/2026 12:50

Would you elongate any of yours? Elliana, Sophia, Amelia (Mia)?

DH and I didn't really like each others top 5 or 10 choices so we ended up writing much longer lists to find a compromise and got there in the end!

Well it didn’t put them off - I think you’re splitting hairs!

Allthebears · 23/08/2026 13:47

Belle or Jasmine? Both Disney princess names!

Do you think the ‘royals’ could be put off by someone’s name? If Catherine had been named something like Goneril, would she have been allowed to marry William?

She wasn’t born into royalty.

So many princesses and Queens called Catherine though. Catherine of Aragon, Catherine the Great both born princesses. Definitely a regal name!

@6ate9 that's an interesting question. I imagine it probably did factor. I guess William would have crossed a Sharon, Tracy or Jodie off his list.

The name Catherine was good enough for Henry VIII. He had three wives with that name!

What about hyphenating a couple of your choice, Lily-Rose or Sophie - Mia you get the idea.

Who wants to be saddled with a hyphenated name?

You seem to be rather over-invested in what was meant to be a light-hearted comment!

  • Evangeline
Is gorgeous and shortens to Eve, Eva, abd Evie.

Much as he doesn't want to shorten it, everyone else will.

At the end of the day you grew a baby in your belly and so you get the final choice!

bananaobama · 23/08/2026 15:04

Is it your first?

stay strong: after the birth he will probably agree to the name you love
