My husband and I can’t agree

My husband and I have very different taste in names and we can’t seem to come to an agreement!

He likes princessy, romantic, long, fairytale names:

  • Seraphina
  • Evangeline
  • Penelope

He also insists on calling her by her full name and doesn’t really like nicknames.

I like cute, mostly 1-2 syllable names:

  • Elle
  • Mia
  • Nina
  • Lily
  • Rose
  • Sophie

A name that we might be getting close to agreeing on is Katherine, because although it is long it has 3 syllables and kinda sounds short. Any other names come to mind that you think sort of match my vibe but can also seem princess-y? Sorry if this is a hard ask!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I prefer your DH’s names but Evangeline will just end up being yet another Evie in the endless sea of Evies.

Your choices other than Nina are so overused.

You seem to be rather over-invested in what was meant to be a light-hearted comment!

I was just musing!

Tryagain26 · 23/08/2026 16:54

Your husband might always call her by her full name but once she goes to school that will change.
My parents always used our full names we were all known by something different by our friends.
Some name suggestions
Astrid
Imogen
Rosa
Hannah
Melody
Christina
Carolina
Naomi
Clara
Cecily
Cora

Thing is he can insist on using her full name but he can’t make others do it, so she will be an Evie or a penny, seraphina is prob the safest one and I think is lovely. Even if it became sera.

i find yours quite over used, and Katherine a bit dull, she will be Kate or Katie.

id go for seraphina of them all,

vdbfamily · 23/08/2026 17:03

Katja
Katerina

RiaOverTheRainbow · 23/08/2026 17:35

DH using a long full name and you using a shorter nickname seems like the easiest solution.

Eleanora nn Elle
Miranda nn Mia
Rosamund nn Rose

Or some 2-ish syllable princessy names:
Celeste
Claudette
Margarite
Selene
Georgette
Charlotte
Delphine
Jacqueline
Sapphire

WWomble · 23/08/2026 17:39

I would find a long name that he likes with a short form that you like, making it clear that you will use the short version. There se lots of lovely longer names with great short versions.

eg Katharine - Kitty, Katy, Kate

iloveanearlynight · 23/08/2026 17:42

Rosalind/Roz/Rosa
Cassia/Cass/Cassie

EvelynBeatrice · 23/08/2026 17:45

What about Shakespearean?

Rosalind ( for him); Lindy or Ros for you?
Jessica ?

Pistachiocake · 23/08/2026 17:50

You can obviously call them what you like, but everyone seems to end up with a nickname if there's more than 2 syllables in their name. At parties, you still sometimes hear parents telling kids they must use the full version of Mart's name, but never heard any of them succeed.

Italiangreyhound · 23/08/2026 17:55

Kitty is lovely.

But Katherine a bit dull.

All your names (except Nina) are rather over-used.

But I say again, you birth baby, you name baby! 👶

She wasn’t born into royalty.

What about Catherine the Great?

TheSandgroper · 25/08/2026 05:09

Caroline. Caro, Carol, Lena or Lina.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 25/08/2026 06:47

Alexandra
Mirella
Rosina
Laetitia
Clara
Cecily
Louisa

Plati · 25/08/2026 07:05

@jinto26

Emmeline (screw the no nicknames and then call her Emme, pronounced Emmy)

ANY name you give a child will be shortened by others whether you like it or not.. or by the child themselves so if you go with Katherine they will always be called Kathy or Kat

StepAwayFromTheLaptop · 25/08/2026 07:12

As others have said, a long name will inevitably be shortened over the years anyway. So I think you could choose a long name with the potential to shorten it to one of your favourites.

Mariella can be Ella or Mia for short
Danielle/Gabrielle - Elle
Theodora - Thea
Dorothy/Dorothy - Dot
Rosamund - Rose/Rosie
Alexandra - Ali/Lexie
Serena - Nina
Sabrina - Nina

SewYellowLikeButter · 25/08/2026 07:34

Alethea (al-eh-thee-ah)?

Evangeline is gorgeous
