What could Lainey be a nickname for?

My husband loves the name Lainey. I think it's cute, but see it more of a nickname.

Does anyone have ideas for a "full" name? So far I've come up with Delaney and Elaine. Our last name starts with E and is 2 syllables if that helps.

Personally, and not speaking for others I've never understood why anyone would give a child a name and then call them a shortened version.

I also think Lainey is a lovely name as is.

I have a friend called Laine.

Lainey is a lovely name. I also think though that Elaine is a beautiful name.

I know an Eleni

Eleni would more likely be “Leni” (like Lenny), though. Lainey is a different pronunciation.

I think Helena is your best bet OP!

I think this is nicest and works best.

Elaine is very, very dated.

Elaine is not dated, it's a name that's never been in fashion and is relatively unusual. I'd be surprised to hear Lainey as a shortening/nickname for any name. I suppose Elaine is a fair guess at something that could shorten to Lainey. I can think of only 2 famous Elaines - Elaine Page and Elkie Brookes.

Verlaine, after the poet, is really beautiful if you like slightly posh-boho names.

Adalaine or Madalaine for my vote

thebustonowhere · 25/07/2026 00:04

I know a lainey. It’s short for Lorraine. X

Shinyandnew1 · 25/07/2026 00:08

I’ve only ever known it as a shortening for Madeleine.

Not what you asked (sorry!) but I know a Lani, just as is.

The name Lani primarily originates from Hawaiian, where it translates to "heaven," "sky," or "royal". It is often used as a standalone feminine given name or as a suffix in popular Hawaiian names like Leilani (heavenly lei/child).

Leilani is very pretty, imho, if you didn't want Lani/Lainey.

My grandaughter is Lainey her full name is Delaney

VoteForCountBinface · 25/07/2026 00:45

Eleni is pronounced El-ENN-y.

fromgothtoboss · 25/07/2026 00:47

Lainey is perfectly fine as it is! I like it, reminds of she’s all that.
