DH and I love thr name Brianna for a girl.

But we have told it to two family members and they both misheard it as "Rihanna". Admittedly both are a little hard of hearing.

Do you think this would be a common problem for her in real life?

@MauriceTheMussel Have you been living in a cave for a few years? Her name was everywhere and her mum is always on tv.

I didn’t collocate Brianna with the murdered teen. Never said I’d never heard of the crime.

If someone says Holly, I don’t think of Soham.

whoTFismadelaine · 24/02/2026 22:46

She will be called Brie. As in the cheese.

OhDear111 · 25/02/2026 09:33

@MauriceTheMusselThat was decades ago and Holly is a common enough name. Brianna is not. It’s a modern name and sadly it’s a very recent highly publicised murder. The difference is the use of the names and who knows a Brianna who is 50? It’s a now name and people will think a baby is named after Brianna.

MauriceTheMussel · 25/02/2026 09:46

@OhDear111 Ok…. You do realise everyone’s different and I don’t have to have the same references and reactions, right?

OhDear111 · 25/02/2026 11:03

@MauriceTheMussel Well obviously but most people now could not name the Soham girls as the mums of babies were dc back then. Everyone knows cases that are awful and recent. Other than you.

Abhannmor · 25/02/2026 11:18

Won't some people pronounce it Bry- anna ? Presumably it's a feminine version of Brian , minted in the USA. Brian itself is a very old name , the most famous being High King Brian Boru who died way back in 1014 AD.
Though more recently it has become the butt of jokes about football managers etc.

But I like the shortening Bree.

rosedancing · 25/02/2026 11:31

I like Bree as it sounds breezy but Brianna seems a bit of a mouthful especially for an adult.
I suspect she would be know as B.

Waltzers · 25/02/2026 11:46

It’s quite well used in Australia, I know a few who go by Bree and a couple who use the full Brianna, the youngest one I know is 18 though.

OhDear111 · 25/02/2026 12:02

Life of Brian didn’t do Brian any favours. Names go in cycles though. Not sure the feminine version was ever popular here but Brian or Bryan certainly was 50 plus years ago.

I think Brian and Bryan were pretty unusual 50 years ago.

Yes more like 70+ now.

NamingNoNames · 25/02/2026 14:11

Wasn't there a Bryan or Brian in Boyzone Westlife? I like the name Brian but it makes me think of someone over 75.

Harrietsaunt · 25/02/2026 14:14

It’s very US Trailer Trash. Sorry.

OhDear111 · 25/02/2026 14:38

@NamingNoNames Well, ok 70 years ago! I was trying not to be ageist!

I don't think it would be ageist.

DoubleDoubleDown · 25/02/2026 15:49

I’m an outlander fan so I thought of Brianna from outlander.

Me too, I love the name

Zennia · 25/02/2026 16:15

When I read this name, I'm not sure whether to say Bry-anna (like Brian) or Bree-anna (rhyming with Rihanna). I've heard both pronunciations.

I think it's fine. I don't love it myself but it's a perfectly acceptable name.

SwedishEdith · 25/02/2026 16:25

I think of Briana Corrigan when I hear the name.

Becs258 · 25/02/2026 16:26

I’ve known a few. My cousin is also called Brianna. I wouldn’t use it myself, but nothing wrong with it.

The feminine version is of recent origin though. Still , all names are made up essentially? Go for it. Bree is a lovely shortening.

Zennia · 26/02/2026 09:48

It's not the same spelling but there's a character named Briana mentioned in Spencer's The Faerie Queene. So the name itself is surprisingly old even though its popularity is recent.
